You need to have the car jacked up and level. Make sure the trans fluid is at operating temperature and the car is running and in park. There is a plug just below the axle going to the right side. When you remove it , fluid should be at that level. If none comes out, there is a vent cap on top of the trans near the back. That is where you fill it. Add the proper fluid until it starts coming out of the inspection hole. You could also put a small hose on the oil bottle and squeeze it in through the inspection hole, but that can get really messy! If the trans is not warm and the engine running you will not get the proper amount in the trans.
Good luck, it's really not as bad as it sounds.

thread revival....so i have a couple questions
how much fluid does the auto tranny hold? i want to replace the stock tranny fluid with synth ATF and i need to know if i bought enough
also, just out of curiosity, is it bad to mix synth ATF with normal ATF? if i dont have enough ATF then i might just top off whats in there until i make it to pep buys again
i also plan on making a how-to for this, so i want to get it right

To REALLY change the trans fluid you need a pressure machine. You can just drain it and fill it, but doing that leaves about 2 quarts of old fluid still in the trans that just won't drain out. A dry 4t45e trans takes over 11 quarts.

Let me understand your intentions correctly. You plan to install a cooler, which will require you to add some additional fluid. You don't plan to change your fluid, you just want to add what is necessary after the installation to bring it back up to full. Correct?
In that case, you should use GM stock dexron 3. Don't mix. This fluid is very picky stuff.
If you are changing all of the fluid, use whatever you want.

i understand the confusion. i intended to switch to synth, but wasnt going to do so yet, so i was asking if i can mix until im ready to make the full swap
so i guess i have a new question...can i just drain the tranny of the 9 quarts that come out and leave the 2 in there that you said wouldnt come out without the use of a pressure machine? or would the mixture of 9qt synth and 2qt regular be bad? btw im still under 10,000 miles, so the stock tranny fluid isnt really worn in or anything...not new, but its not like its 40,000 miles old
