Automatic transmission difference

So i have a quick question. I've looked everywhere and i cant find what the difference is. I have a 2008 cobalt LT Automatic and she's recently (as in Sunday) decided it didn't need a tranny anymore and self imploded it. So i'm looking online and i can get a tranny for before 1/7/08 and after 1/7/08. What makes it more confusing is i know my car was built in January of 08. I don't know if it really makes a difference or what. Thanks!

they are all the same transmission, however they arent all interchangable. there were some changes in 2008, im just trying to remember what all they were. internally there were a lot of changes, im trying to find out something easy to identify.

if you get the 4 digit code off the transmission tag the wrecker you get it from should be able to cross refference it to make sure you get the correct trans.

Wrong answer.

Same model transaxle, yes. Different variations of that transaxle, yes.

Will they all fit pretty much the same, yes.

Will they all function correctly, no.

Okay thanks. If by any chance where would the 4 digit code be at? I've worked on Getrag and Muncies in everything from Crate stocks to Late Models, but i need to get it replaced in a two day window and i plan on buying the tranny first. I know i could probably do a google search but as always, I've gotten more answers here in a day than i have in a week of searching :P I Also have it sitting in front of my house and plan on trailering it to our race shop to do it (half price to do it myself), so i don't have any shop or tow company with any of the information.
