Broken Axle shaft and ???????

OK, here is the deal. I recently put slightly larger tires on the car and the first time I wheel hopped, I broke the driver side axle, but no oil coming from the transmission. I replace the axle and still have no drive. I did a quick inspection of the other axle, and the trans case and did not find anything. I will put it in the air tomorrow and inspect thoroughly. When I put in gear, I can hear the trans gears turning. No unusual sounds. I do have the limited slip differential.

If you have had this problem, tell me what it was, so I spend as little time possible diagnosing and more time fixing.

May have blown the pinion in the transaxle. This happened to a buddy of mine in his 2.2L cobalt.

Car just stopped moving.

Of course oil cam out when the axle shaft was out. I meant that there was no oil dripping on the ground indicating a broken transmission case.

The 2.2L has the F23 trans in it and I have the F35 with LSD. I don't know if a pinion failure is the common failure mode with the F35. I seemed to think that the common failure mode was to break the case and take out many parts.

Yes that is true they are a different transmission.

I am sure these two have a similar design though being they are for the same car.

Something in the trans has broke if its not driving the axles but its still going into gear OK.

Good Luck! Hope its not to bad!

We have notoriously thin trans axles man. They are pretty crappy along with everything else in the drive train short of the fill plug.

That is a good point. Hopefully I just took out the differential though.

Latest news on my trans failure is that it appears as if the pinion shaft was pushed through the clutch housing far enough to disengage the pinion from the differential. If that is the case, the best scenario involves repairing the clutch housing (weld up and re-machine the pocket) and the worst scenario means new clutch housing, pinion bearing, pinion shaft and pinion gear (and possibly differential). I did not have time to pull the trans, so it is being done at a local shop. I was talking to one of the engineers in GM's high performance vehicle operations, and he suggested that the fact that I am running front tires that are 1/2" taller than stock, that the added inertia of the taller tire created enough shock load in wheel hop to cause the failure. Unfortunately, I have not been successful at getting anyone at GM to step up to the plate with a new trans or new parts to take care of this trans. Oh well, it was my heavy foot combined with my modifications that caused the problem in the first place.
