Clutch Time. NEED OPINIONS.
Well its been determined that with my current setup my clutch is slipping. I also plan to twin charge the car over winter and push the limits of the engine.
So my problem.. Ive been looking at others setups, ZZP, SPEC, etc. Now ZZP says they dont like spec so I was just going to order from zzp.
However I thought I would ask others WHO have used aftermarket clutches making crazy power to see what was GOOD FOR STREET, as well as hold all kinds of power. Is that even possible? I donno.. The car will see some track time as well but more street driven.
Is an aluminum flywheel worth it?

My friend, lifter on here, has the GMPP clutch kit. he likes it.
I'm always a big advocate of sticking with the stock clutch as long as possible, as it'll last the longest under most conditions, but when the amount of torque you are putting down necessitates the need of a different option, my advice is to go with a twin or triple plate clutch.
Bottom line is a heavily sprung single plate will transfer all the shock of rapid engine speed transients onto the transmission. In essence the clutch hold more torque because it just transfers all the shock to the transmission instead of absorbing it. This increases the likelihood of rapid transmission wear / failure. Gears are brittle because they are very hard metal. They dont yield much at all before they crack, so shock is bad.
Through minor slip, twin/triple plates absorb a great deal more shock than a overspring single plate.
Twin/triple plates can also still hold all that torque with a lot less spring pressure because of the increased frictional surface area. So you get to keep that stock pedal feel.

Thanks for the ideas so far. Were already running a 2.8 on the car, but its not enough. So were gonna rock this thing. Money doesnt matter to much. We want it insane. And over the winter its getting brake upgrades, suspension, tires for better traction and whatever else we think it needs to make it a monster.
I donno what the crank HP is from a good twin charge setup is, but are you sure a GMPP would hold its own?

Is there a clutch that will take 500 WHP and still be nice on the leg? Or am I just wasting time trying to find that? Theres so many options available, but I need something thats gonna take the power.

What I don't get is, there's a ZR1 corvette out there, making what? Over 600hp or something like that stock. The clutch on that is perfectly fine for street driving. Why is it that if you try to get a clutch that strong for a FWD car it's impossible to drive on the street without either launching every light or killing your leg?

Tell u wut. Order from a place called kentucky clutch. I got my 6 puck double sprung and great pressure plate, good for 550 ft lbs and pedal feel is good. Price was, let just say for.the price of the gmpp clutch u can.more.then likely get the kentucky clutch (clutch).... they make everything themselves.

This kit is capable of up to 300 hp and will give users better performance and more load capability because of increased surface area and extra clamping force.
But that's prolly CRANK HP. I would think 350 WHP would be WELL beyond the capacity of this kit? I have the SS/ TC..which I believe is rated pretty close to this one..maybe a bit higher. I don't think 350WHP would hold well with the stock clutch, but maybe the TC has much more torque than the SC.
Clutchmasters stages 1-3 use the same Heavy Duty PP and its rated at a minimum of 2200 Lbs clamp force. The TC stocker is 1800 lbs...I would assume the GMPP upgrade is the same rating as stock TC.

How to choose a clutch material
ZZP says they don't like ANY of the competition...I read the statement. They also say their upgraded clutch PP has 1900 lbs for stage 4 (vs 1800 for stock TC). Clutchmasters, who they *don't like* is a min of 2200 LBS. The PP clamping force is more important than the disc material, although that's certainly a consideration. ZZP stage 4 is a CERAMIC disc...that sucker has ZERO SLIP and if you wanna drive for daily use, you better be prepared.
Bottom line...be carefull not to OVERWHELM the tranny (and your leg) with too much clutch. Not knocking ZZP, but I don't like the way they DISS the competition to make themselves look better.

Thanks for more ideas. Looks like ceramic might be a bad choice then. I still havent ordered anything..
And yes I have used the search feature and have done some reading but didn't find the facts I wanted.
I appreciate the feedback. And I see how ZZP hates everything. Originally I was just gonna order a Spec because Ive seen them work well in other applications. Then read zzp, and now Im here trying to gather first hand experience from other users.
