your using more gas in neutral than if you downshift like your supposed to, research something called "Decelleration Fuel Cut Off"
also, you will not wear out your clutch if you revmatch properly.
your transmission/clutch/engine IS there for decellerating, not just accel.
please dont justify poor driving habits with ill informed information
Neutral coasting is dangerous, and in some cases, illegal.
whoever taught you to do it. was wrong.

Guess it depends on time of year and mood. Warmer weather seems to richen up the mix and I get alot of crackle in my exhaust when it coasts in gear. I downshifted/left it in gear more then (probably because it sounds nice). Now that colder weather is uppon us (and my clucth is dying) I leave it out of gear more often.
It also seems toughter to rev match when up shifting in cold weather because the engine doesn't want to drop RPMs very quickly. So if I don't feel like waiting, I slow it with the clutch but the engine seems to bog for a second after fully clamped.

ex: 40 in 4th gear, downshift to 2nd, rev match and engine brake to slow down to 25. People do it. It's stupid, but people do it.

anyone who is arguing the fact the engine braking is illegal should look at the signs that say that use of engine retarders are illegal within city limits. thats what engine braking is.

its only illegal on large trucks, and only in certain areas.
where its nicknamed a "jake brake" ever heard that godawful loud noise when a big truck is slowing down?
yeah they arent supposed to use them in cities because of the noise
and that is not just engine braking, that is engine RETARDING....
those signs have nothing to do with small vehicle engine braking.
engine braking is NOT illegal in a car.

The signs clearly say "NO ENGINE BRAKING", but nothing about trucks or cars. On these roads that i've seen it on, they are more country then other types of roads. Small and narrow, 2 lane road.

ya i was using that as a rough example of using the engine to slow down the vehicle. and ya some of the signs say truckers and other's don't it all depends on what road your on.

And about driver's ed, times have changed ALOT since your day.
These days in drivers ed, you take a few tests and boom, you have a permit.

I actually coast in neutral to a stop, but I do not use the clutch to get to neutral. I will wait until I come down to about 1300RPM and then it glides right into neutral from any gear. I have done that since day one. I've done that on any manual I have every had. Is that bad?

and yes its bad. its unsafe, and illegal in places..
I strongly suggest you learn to decellerate properly with your car in gear.

There is no way you can tell me that downshifting does NOT use more fuel than coasting. If you can't figure out why, then I don't think you should be part of this debate. I don't really agree with your other "cons" either, but those are negligible, so I wont argue them.
