f35 and 4.45 questions...
Hi guys, I'm new to this forum but my car shares a lot of similarities to yours...
I've got a 2001 Saab 9-3 Viggen
built 2.3 liter motor running a GT3071 on e85 making 378whp 400wtq
I'm in the process of building my transmission and want to change to a 4.45 final drive... from the reading ive done im gathering that the best source is a 2000-2002 saturn l series...
Does anyone have anyother info on where I can find the ring gear and output shaft in the cobalt world?
I already have a quaife LSD and am harvesting a new style f55 from an 06 saab 9-3 as the gears and synchro's are a little bit tougher than the older f35's... I just wanna find the 4.45 ring gear and pinion shaft?
Thanks for anyones help in advance...

The best source for 4.45 is Tailleferro Genuine Saab. Mongorat on here may have gotten the last they had for the moment. Tailleferro have decent prices and are decent to deal with. Mongorat sent me a 4.45 he said was from an L series, the gears were the right tooth count but the ring gear wont fit the F35 transmission...
Tougher gears and synchro's on an F55? LOL i wish. Someone gave you some koolaid, its the same trans for the Saab as the Cobalt , with some external differences for shifter and hydraulic hook up, a different F number, but F55 is a 4.05 F35, and the F57 is a 3.8. The internals are identical all years....oh and the observation about the "older F35"? That code transmission, first saw daylight as a 2004 Ion Redline with 4.05 cwp.....
Not trying to be mean, just want to make sure that you know what we know.
(Haha IF you had it)The cylinder head exhaust port of your head Saab 2.0 head is smaller than a wimpy 2.0 LSJ supercharged head, so to make some real power you may want to consider uncorking that port a little...(correction you have a 2.3 so that comment was totally wrong ! MY bad.) Lol....

Yea, I deal with nick quite often, just wanted to see where he is sourcing these from. L-series Saturn's are a dime a dozen, where as the only saab trans that came with the 4.45 final drive is the manual transmission v6 900's, in the US anyways. So I was just hoping to find one on my own.
So the saturn L-series ring gear is different, but the output shaft is the right one?
Can you clarify that for me?
Thanks for the input, I've got a couple more places to try and source a 4.45 trans.
As far as my head goes, its going to the machine shop this week to get stronger/stiffer springs and thicker valves put in... as well as a good port and polish... just trying to make everything a little more durable...

I am assuming the wrong part he sent me came from a Saturn L series. MY new ones came from GM direct, and I didnt ask for sources in 2004, but at the time it was probably GM Fiat powertrain.
Difficult to find.
The folks at GM really dont give 2 cents for this stuff in the scheme of things... at the time in 2004 we had to cut open a transmission to figure out how they went to gether. No co-operation at all from Europe. The first manual I got in 2005 was very good, but had specific tolerances for assembly according to mileage that seemed really far fetched...We just went to mins and maxs as we felt was needed. Early transmissions had trouble with 2nd gear synchro steel rings, but we never had trouble with that on track if we 1. assembled it right and 2. beat on the drivers not to rush the shift. and 3. ditched the short shifters we prototyped with B&M and.4. adjusted the shift cables correctly.
Most folks dont know how to adjust shift cables, and some folks need a driver mod so badly, they bend the shift cables. Bend them! Stainless steel...imagine. Poor car.
