F40 swap info

Hey guys, been searching heavily on this subject and have yet to find all the answers I am looking for.
1. Does the rpd shift light still work with the f40?
2. Does it disable the ability to set torque management by gear?
3. What mileage would be the cut-off for a good transmission? I've read people saying 50k? I can only find one with 60-80k
4. Does the NLS feature still work with the f40?
5. Are parts available to rebuild it? In case I decide to go with a high mileage trans.

Thanks in advance for an info. I wanna get the swap done before I grenade my trans. That way I can sell my f35 and recover some money. If anyone's looking for a G85/LSD 4.05 F35 tranny with less than 5k miles, pm me.

First off, in for info. Second, your car has less than 5k miles?!?!? Or is it not the factory trans?

My HHR had the dreaded "Second gear grinding issue" and yes, was replaced under warranty a few months ago. I'm all in for this swap when the conversion kit becomes available, and plan on installing myself.

Would also like to know if there are any differences between the 07-08 trans vs 09-11 trans. When searching for the trans there is a compatibility separation between the 07-08 and the 09-11.

4: Yes, very much yes

Infraredline wont be able to help since he has a LSJ. He may know about rebuilding it though.

Awesome thanks for the info. I've read to get 07-09 but it's odd that car part .com has the 08 and 09 listed separately, as if those two years are not compatible

Well gents, the tranny has been sitting in my garage for a few weeks now as I have been gathering lots of info. Quaife LSD has been ordered and I am now comfortable installing the diff myself. Super pumped for this project. Phase 1 has commenced..

Here's some F40 **** for you guys, and also included some torque specs. I should mention, I cannot take full responsibility for gathering all the info I have. I've been working with a member here who is asset to our community. You know who you are, thanks buddy!

Quaife QDF21B is the diff you want for the saab trans. This bad boy should be installed in a couple days. The tranny is now sitting in a heated garage. Always measure you tolerances at room temp ~70°F.

I plan on making a How-to for installing the diff in the f40. It's really MUCH easier to do a diff swap in the f40 compared to the f35.

is it possible to change the final drive to something more agressive when you swap the diff?

This would mean that you would be pulling gears, which changes everything because you would have to measure output shaft tolerances if you were able to successfully swap the small gear that meshes to the diff/ring gear. Changing the diff/ring gear is easy though. I haven't been able to find specific info about pulling gears, changing syncros, ect. for this trans. It seems as though the factory doesn't encourage repair of this trans at all, only replacement of the entire gearbox. This is where I draw the line but it looks doable. However, according to ZZP you want to keep the gearing the 07+ comes with.

Yes, you will really like the gearing in that trans, even compared to the 4.05 you had in there. Good info you shared there.

Not really a huge fan of the 4.05 lol. First gear blows. at least with the f40 I will be able to take first gear to around or just over 40MPH but I think I may have to raise the limiter a little. What rpm do you wind out to Infra? Have you checked to see what mph you max out at in first gear?

I suppose you guys with your low LNF rev limiters can't really get the benefits of the shorter gearing with the 4.05. Like a stock head LSJ can rev to 7400 just fine, with a 3.82 that would be painfully long At 8k on the 4.05 3rd is right around 127-128mph lol.

I have a list of the speeds in each gear at my redline, but its on my old phone, so I'll have to look. I rev to 8,000 rpms, and 1st is right above 40, 2nd is about 80, 3rd is like 118, and 4th is 158 I believe, all at 8k. I'll look and confirm that though. So 1st is close to the 3.82 1st, and 2nd is close to the 4.05, then it gets shorter after that, so you get right back into the power when you shift in the higher gears. I've actually used 5th quite a few times at WOT where I never hit 5th once with the old blower setup and 4.05. I really enjoy the gearing of the F40.

I work for Jasper Engines and Transmissions so the tools wouldn't be the issue , it's finding the gear set that I'm having trouble with. The Regal GS final drive is more aggressive but I can't seem to find it anywhere. I may just keep the stock gearing when i buy mine

What final drive are you looking for exactly? I can look through my Saab workshop software to see if there is a trans that comes with the FD you are looking for.
