Grinding into 1st?

Another synchro problem, or driver being an idiot?

I'm guessing the former of the two. I'm willing to guess it's from trying to shift into first at about 20 with the clutch in. It was intermittent at first but it kind of does it more often now. I've been stopping myself from trying to push it into first before coming to a complete stop. However it's becoming harder to shift into first from a dead stop as well, I sometime have to like push, pull, push to get it to finally go into gear.

I realize it's most likely my error, but what are my chances of getting it covered under warranty if/when I'm no longer able to get into first at all? I mean they can't really call abuse on not going into first, at least as far as I can think.

I'd take it now, but with my luck I/they wouldn't be able to duplicate the problem so it wouldn't get fixed.

dude once you are in 2nd at 20 mph just coast to a stop...wtf...never downshift to first.

the latter. And if you were in my shoes, youd get it fixed no questions asked. I have really nice guys for a dealership though, they arent all bad...you just only hear all the bad stories, but whats there to expect when there are thousands of people on a board.

oh, and they most likely wouldnt warranty it because what you are trying to do isnt right...therefore, it isnt broken, you are just trying to break it. there is a reason there is a lock-out in first until under 20mph.

True, my dealership is pretty good, they replaced my 2nd gear and clutch in about 18 hours

It's not really down shifting to first, I sometimes hold the clutch but try and shift into first but continue holding the clutch until I stop(it grinds going into first even with the clutch depressed). It's kind of a leftover instinct from when I learned. I'm getting better at coasting in 3rd/2nd to about 1000k then hitting the clutch.

Not just this car but any car will hate it if you try to put it into first while its still moving.

Well, I'm confident in my dealer. I kind of want to get a clutch and flywheel kit before I take it in, cause last time the tech offered to install an aftermarket clutch in place of stock as part of the warranty(They had it apart to replace 2nd gear and clutch.) Free labor FTW.

Actually I put it into 1st, while my foot is on the clutch though! I don't let it slow down in gear in 1st!

I believe that if you read your manual I think I read in there or maybe some where on the web that these cars will not or try to not allow you to shift back into first until the car gets back down to about 12 km/hr. Now like most have told you it is just not a good idea to down shift into 1st gear.

cheers
