Non OEM clutches make a rattle/grind type noise on decel in these cars. If the noise changes and does not go away when you press in the clutch I would say tob is going out

If I'm on the highway and let off the gas it makes the grinding noise. Press the clutch in and it goes away...

That's because you're lifting the plate off, effectively not spinning the clutch disc/flywheel. So there wouldn't be any noise.

TOB "failing" noise is a whirring sound you can hear at idle that goes away with the clutch open.

That's because you're kind of moving a gear into place, you shouldn't do that without the clutch open.

You are forcibly separating the gears.

Mine does the whirring sound except it's when the clutch is up, as in NOT pressed to the floor. When I press it to the floor, the sound goes away.

Tranny input shaft bearing?

I just looked in the service manual, under the MU3 transmission section, and it says that if the sound goes away when the clutch is pressed to the floor then it's a transmission problem (probably input shaft bearing). The fix? Transmission disassembly.

Orrrrr, new car. haha. I bet you could drive it for a while before anything fails though...

Mines the same. Wouldn't worry. 160k+ and counting.
F35's pop up on here from time or time, or Mongo always has one in stock for a cheap price if it really bothers you and are changing out the clutch soon.

If it gets terrible either the bearing will seize or it'll leak fluid. Not worried anymore lol

Mine makes a similar whirring or whine when letting off the gas in third. Not too worried since its new transmission.

Im pretty sure its just our tranny that makes this noise. Mine has done for close to 50,000 miles and ive had no issues. Its not so much of a grinding noise as it is a rubbing type of noise

This happened to me last week. My tranny has never made a noise or any sign of anything going. Right as I was heading out on a long road trip, suddenly going into third I heard a loud grinding noise that vibrated the entire car. Felt like a wheel bearing was gone or I blew a tire, then I noticed it was only when I shifted into gear (3rd mostly) I got on the highway went through the gears til I was in 5th then the noise got terribly loud at 120km and the vibration was crazy. Not too long after the car shut off so I pulled over, went to start it up itd go into gear without the clutch but wouldn't engage gear. The gears felt all fine to go in so I'm thinking its not the trans. I blew a trans before in my cav and 1st n 2nd had absolutely nothing, every gear was tight and locked in but no gear would engage so I got it towed home. Does anyone know what this could be? I'm really curious to get opinions. 05 cobalt ss/sc

I'm going to bump this. 09 t/c 49k miles. Stock clutch, stock mounts. Never used to do it. If I am on the gas it doesnt do it. If I am in gear and decel or not on gas, it makes noise. With the clutch pressed in, it does not make noise. Its like a whirring or even sounds like wind coming through but a bit "deeper" or lower tone than that, sounds like something is spinning or grinding.

Does it quiet in 2nd. If Im doing 40-50mph in either 3rd or 4th its real loud when not on gas, it does it in 5th gear almost regardless, not as loud when on gas, but def does it. I also at first TOB, but since its only when its engaged and not when its depressed or on the gas, I'm stumped.

Still under warranty, might get it looked at, but would rather have an idea of what it is first before they just start randomly taking thing apart.

sounds

people who just put a new clutch in...i just did mine put it on the lift and found it was a little cover that comes off with 2 bolts that was rubbing i think the flywheel. you would feel it on deceleration when you were higher in the gear. i have the spec stage 3 and aluminum flywheel and lnf throw out in my lsj. lnf throwout just needs bench bled in order for it to work fine with the car. im getting the noise coming back now and i think its the same thing so im going to try and take it back off today and bend it a little more. also...the click when you let off is axle click. need new ones soon. not necessarily now but soon.
