He keeps trashing my cobalt sstc!!!!!!

hey hp freaks, new to forum. have recently purchased a 09 cobalt sstc. (which i admit only know about car what mags have said) i want to start modding but my buddy keeps telling me in between his laughter that i made a mistake buying this car. its a POS and cannot handle any drivetrain/power mods. and i will soon regret it>>> (nice friend)

i wanted to start with some tranny mounts (front/rear) and he was saying that the popular rotated mounts everyone seems to get cause a crapload of additional stress on tranny and clutch, but spare the axles. he was also saying that anything around 300whp/340-350 wtrq will soon wreck clutch, trans and axles!!! i'm like WTF??? what??????

he doesnt even have a balt (his cuz has one) and he has had nothing but probs (according to him) and wants to trade in for a genesis or speed3 or even a new v6 stang. idk, sounds depressing, hope these assuptions arent all true. some feedback would lift me a bit. good to be here on this forum though. i'm sick of hearing his rants.....

Sounds like a good friend....

Best thing to do is read around. Common consensus it downpipe and tune are the 2 biggies to do ASAP! Upgrade the rest as you go along.

tell your friend to go play on I95. he obviously doesnt know anything. i know people like that as well, trash talkin cars they have no knowledge about. you made a good purchase. i personally dont have no experience with the LNF platform seein as i have a turbo L61 and even turbo these things are fun so i can only imagine how much funner a LNF would be. like nick said, downpipe, and tune at least, but you can also go with a drop in filter, and hot side piping.

As said, your friend is an idiot. He obviously knows nothing about cars and just repeats everything he hears, no matter where he hears it from.

Nothing wrong with the Cobalt SS. Very reliable and fun daily driver for me. Decent fuel economy as well.

I would never buy a Cobalt is all out power was my goal though. Thats true of anything with a 4 cylinder and FWD, its just not ideal.

As for your cousin buying an MS3 or Genesis, tell him good luck with that. MS3's seem to have a bad habit of blowing motors (stock), and the Genesis is just a total Korean pile of ****, nothing good about that car or its manufacturer.

yes, I know my friend is just hearing (prob from his cuz and their cronies) and not experiencing and yes he is buttcrack. (he drives a civic si) and its HIS cuz with the "problem" sstc. But, yes, tune, dp and filter, sounds good........

but can anyone address what he specifically said about rotated mounts adding stress to clutch/tranny. and about anything around 300/350 to wheels (or so) wrecking clutch, tranny and axles>>>>> i gotta know some truth here. btw, I'm a fairly good driver when it comes to a manual car, and my friend knows this, and he also knows I dont autocross and i drive fairly moderate. to which he still says, "doesn't matter how u drive that cobalt, with your mods it's gonna all break, very soon" (drivetrain components, he speaks of....) and yes, I am already researching this site for experiences.... thank you

Never heard anything about axles.
Clutches seem to vary anywhere from starting to slip at 350ft/lbs all the way up to 400+ without issue. So somewhere in that range. Tranny is obviously somewhere slightly higher than that.

The transmission mounts are going to reduce wheel hop so one can only assume they will put some added stress on the axles/transmission.

If he talks **** just tell him to put up or shut up. Race him stock, unless he's got mods you will smoke him like a cheap cigar (light it up, realize it's not even worth it, toss it out)

Sounds like a jealousy thing to me.

im 330 whp 388ft's daily driven no issue's and im stock clutch and tranny. Not to say that people do not have issues, it's all in the way you treat your car. P.S once tuned keep the nls to a minimum.

Some people are just smoke blowers. Stand by your decision to own what you do. You don't need his appreciation and gratitude to enjoy your ride.

Ignore the haters.

And tag his mom.
