ok first of all i am getting a new clutch. but am not getting a light weight flywheel. (lack of funds) but how critical is it to get the stock one resurfaced or get a stock replacement? or can you just get a new clutch and slap it in. i have never had to replace a clutch before. thanks.

Really it depends on how the flywheel looks. If it's not gooved or hot spotted badly, then you might be able to get away with scotchbright padding it real quick and then using some brake cleaner on it. If it is indeed bad, you should take it off and have it resurfaced, but GM calls for it to be replaced due to it being a stepped design, and they are hard to resurface.

quicker revs, freer spinning motor, figure any weight that is removed from the flywheel is making it easier to spin the motor (rotating mass).

Jackalope

A lighter flywheel is great to have to be sure but not needed. However if you install a new clutch on an old flywheel thats NOT re-surfaced all your doing is setting yourself up for another new clutch sooner rather then later. Spend the few bucks to get it turned, it needs it.

As 2K5SS/SC? said, you can't turn the flywheels in these cars. It messes with tolerances.

GM recommends them to be replaced. If you can find a good machine shop however, it can be resurfaced, but the dowel pins have to be removed and both levels have to be cut exactly the same. The local dealership did it when I let them mess up my car. The flywheel came out fine, it was just the idiots that installed it and the bad clutch from ClutchMaster's that was the issue.
