Intermediate shaft hard to get out?
What's up guys. I was taking out my intermediate shaft hat goes into my trans today, and it was extremely hard to get out. I had to hammer it out and hammer it back in and it barely wen t in hammering it... Anyone know why?
On the shaft that goes into the trans, (shortly after the spline ends) had a tough scoring on the metal. I had grenaded a trans before and I was guessing maybe that's why that's there? .. (Metal from the bad trans chewed up IM SHAFT) Maybe it got hot and swelled up? Maybe the scoring has something to do with it?
Inside the trans the LSD seems very smooth and nothing out of the ordinary.

clean the inside of the spline in the intermediate shaft with brake cleaner and inspect. you should be able to push it in by hand. Also inspect what you can see of the output shaft spline in the trans.

I did it about 2 weeks ago, replaced it with Dorman. It's pain in the ass to get it off, my best advise to have somebody else with you to take it off instead of doing it yourself. Cause it take a lot of time and effort to take that bitch off. Since it's rusted inside, just spray wd40 then pounding with crowbar with hammer and slowly come off.

It was hard to get out and hard to get back in.
I had to bang it in with a hammer. And I did a trans job on a friends cobalt, his was butter in and out. Inside of my trans (LSD) seemed fine. Very smooth no scoring or anything. Which makes me wonder mine is so hard to get in.

OP, you are talking about the middle shaft where it enters the trans, he is talking about where the axle enters the intermediate shaft, different deal.
There shouldn't be any reason to need to hammer it back in, unless the snap ring is mangled or something. I don't recall off hand if there is a retaining clip where the intermediate shaft engages the diff, there shouldn't be as it's bolted to the block and cant come out, but usually they are designed that way anyway. It's been a while since I've done a cobalt one to say for certain.

Maybe I'll order a IM Shaft just for the hell of it. Maybe it got hot for some reason and swelled up? Who knows.

Read this joe, you think it could be the IM shaft? Only thing I haven't replaced.

Look like Dorman stop making those but APDTY make them. They are the same as Dorman, here's link. But price went up to $78.
