Official: Cost of Auto to Manual
Short Version: The general consensus is it cost WAY too much(~$4000) and it is technically impossible because of the way the cars are programmed from the factory. In short, you should have bought your car with a manual, if you didn't you're SOL. Congratulations.
Maybe this will help stop the Auto to Manual Threads.
This is all using GM MSRP Prices for NEW parts(obtained from GM Parts Direct)
Transmission: $1,800.69
Clutch Disc: $125.27
Flywheel: $116.82
Pressure Plate: $223.34
Master Cylinder: $152.81
Clutch Slave Cylinder: $102.40
Clutch Flex Hose: $66.35
Shift Cable: $124.48
Console: $82.28
Front Trans Mount: $67.46
Rear Trans Mount: $69.95
Total(WITHOUT LABOR): $2931.85
This is WITHOUT labor, so I'm guessing labor would be a good 8-12 hours at maybe $90/hr
bringing labor total to around $720 - $1080.
So your looking at close to $4000 for this swap. Considering the auto is a $880 option you could have saved $4880 by getting your Cobalt with a manual in the first place.
Parts not found(maybe someone with dealerworld access could help):
Shifter Assembly
Pedal Assembly
If I missed something someone could please let me know, I think I covered almost everything.

this is not a possible swap without hp tuners, a pcm and wiring harness. you cant have gm reprogram the vehicle to a standard, once gm asigns auto or stick to your vin number, its there for good. they are able to change engine, but not transmissions. with hpt you can turn off all the auto functions in the pcm.

From what I know, the manuals have just an ECM and no PCM. I say this because theres nothing really electronic to a manual transmission(except maybe VSS and Reverse lights). That said you may need an ECM but the point of the thread is to show you it's quite impractical to do the swap.

The ss/sc has a TCM built in, it's just disabled. I'm sure the E16a in the 2.2 is the same

2000+ gm stuff isnt as easy as just changing the pcm out for another. the vin number is flashed into the pcm and must match the vin number flashed into the bcm, abs, airbag module, ect. if they dont match, the vehicle wont start. this is a theft prevention thing. if you doing an engine swap its easy to deal with, just go to gm and tell them what you have done, they will flash the pcm with the proper software and vin for the car. however transmission swaps get tough. gm isnt able to change the auto or 5 speed on the pcm, when gm builds the car the vin is locked at auto or 5 speed. keep in mind that gm isnt able to just check or uncheck a box when flashing, all the flashes come from the gm calibrations center, all the tech does is punch the vin number in and they send the calibration for the vehicle.
our cars do indeed have a pcm, not seperate pcm/tcm. id asume the one under the dash is the bcm (body controll module). id guess the pcm is the same part, just a different calibration.
im sure with hp tuners you could turn the automatic trans functions off, however thats not an option yet for the 2.2l guys.
