Question Picking Right Clutch

Hi to all

This is my first post on the site; so I apologize if is in the wrong section. Also, English is not my natural language, so please apologize my spelling. I will like to ask for your opinion; I just bought my 2006 Cobalt SS/SC about 5 months ago so I'm not sure which stage or mod it has but for what I have read is most likely is still all stock (I will assume stock mean 0 modifications).

I'm not a slow driver at all, but neither I'm a racer, yes sometimes, (joking with friends or just for fun, an occasional race happen against his cars), I step hard into the pedal but that is all. However about a week ago my clutch start failing, (probably because what I just describe, I will not deny my fault); basically I have to rev quite a lot (about 4 or 5k rpm) for the car to move with normal speed, If I don't rev the car just move too slowly (apparently you call this failure "clutch slipping", please correct me if I'm wrong).

So now I need to change it, rt? Well here is my problem, I don't know which clutch to pick; I originally go to Autozone for a replacement, but after looking at the forum seems that the quality is less than good, so that put me thinking, I do not want to change again the clutch again after a few months, I can't cost that kind of service again and again I rather expend a little more this time and save future problems, so I continue my research and found the "Stage 2" and "Stage 3" clutch which give more power to the car and are capable to handle the "occasional race".

So I want to go with some of the Stage 3 version, however that raise me another question: Do I need to change anything else on my car If I use those? (treat me a a newbie with the cars), As I state at the beginning my car is stock. Apparently Flywheel is optional and most of you state that I can use the stock version; but what about the "TOB" do i need to change that one? I ask specifically for that piece because I had found several clutch brands (Spec, Clutch Mater, KY, ACT); some of them (like Clutch master) said the TOB is included on the Clutch kit when applicable; others (like KY) said the TOB is entirely optional.

Ok, so basically these are my question:
1.- Is the Stage 3 good or do you think is too much for me?
2.- Which clutch do you recommend for me? (price/durability/quality/performace) I'm thinking on the KY, but let me know what you think (BTW, I'm not rich guys )

KY Clutch - Chevrolet Cobalt/HHR 2.0L F35 Trans Stage 3

Clutch Masters- Your High Performance Specialists

Duralast/Clutch Set (NU31687) | 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt 4 Cylinders P 2.0L SFI SC | AutoZone.com
(I just put this one as it was my original option, I know is not a Stage 3)

3.- Do I need to buy anything else, beside the clutch kit?
4.- Let's say, I get the KY Kit, Is the TOB a must buy?

Well that is what I have, hopefully you can help me and sorry for the long post.

if you plan on modding the car to gain more power than getting a stage 3 would be good, if you are going to keep it stock you always can go with this kit

Ecotec LSJ Clutch Upgrade Kit 19212712

and it comes with a new TOB too, just like the clutchmasters kits. i have a stage 4 6puck from clutchmasters and i love it. but im definitely not stock either lol.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I do not think I will be adding more power to my car, at least in a couple years; but don't want to suffer about this problem again soon. Apparently the kit you recommend is reinforced somehow as state handle 300hp (which is more than what my stock car give); so you think I will be fine with that? with all the "occasional race" and all that. And If I understand correctly, I do not need to buy anything else?

Thanks Again!

definitely will be fine with that clutch if its going to stay stock. and you shouldnt need anything else if your having a professional install this. also depends on the condition of your flywheel, might need to have it resurfaced.

Thank you very much; seems I will be buying the one you are recommend, I'm not moving from stock right now anyway.

Just out of curiosity: let's say you have my car, what you will do? what do you think of the KY Clutch? Is really worth it to go Stage 3?

i would just stick with the one i showed you unless you plan on going above 300. and to do that your going to need more than just bolt ons.

My stock clutch failed at 50k miles and I didn't plan on doing any mods to the car so I replaced it with a stage 2 clutch and was like ehhh I can prob go stage 3 with a 2.7 pulley and aggressive tune. I was WRONG clutch failed in 20k miles so I went with a stage 3 f300 clutch master clutch and new throw out bearing clutch has grabbed great and no problems have put 23k miles on it still running good. Btw I'm running 299hp and 278tq just for reference

Thank you to All!

I'm not going to upgrade from stock in a couple years so I just order the suggestion from "dcrep06" and "turbosmart4". I will let you know after I installed and test it for a couple miles.

Thanks Again!
