powdercoating a rip off
so i called a few places to check about powdercoating my rims and want a joke!! 100 bucks per rim with ME taking off tires remounting and balancing. 150 bucks for them to do it. 2 places dont even answer phone (legitimacy issues here??!!) and the ones that did answered with a HELLOOOO??, ok idiots, answer your phones stating the name of your establishment>>>>> I felt like i was calling plato's den or something>>> in this economy these fools should do the whole op for 300 bucks even>>> no more, no less> and i'll bet u if they do the dismounting and remounting/balancing, bet u bundle they f*&% up ur rims and throw ur balance off.
some people that do modding for a living can be sooo lazy and prideless. they dont give a crap, most of em'...... i especially love the tuner stories i have heard in the past, (not naming anyone) "yeah, it pulled clean, no knocks, nice and smooth" weeks later they are misfiring and running like crap and some tuners will say, "hey buddy, u take a chance when u get your car tuned, I cant guarantee anything, sorry dude" but they spend 10 hours on their own car.... sorry for the venting guys

Keep shopping around but most powder coating companies may not have a way of dismounting tires so stop being harsh on them. If they have to take the wheels else where they will charge gas, time, and cost of service.
On the tuning thing, most people don't respect tuners. They expect a tuner to set aside a whole day for tuning at the drop of a hat. I run into this alot. I'm a full time nurse, student, have a gf and little free time. Of cours I can spend hours on my car in my free time. Tuning is not my career. Don't expect someone to spend their entire day off on your car for $200... and then retune at the drop of a hat. Personal gripe

Yeah it goes both ways.. I try to bend over backwards for customers whenever possible, but on some rare occasions people just expect way too much. Best thing to do is just set expectations from the get-go, like those companies did, instead of taking your business and surprising you with more than you expected to pay.
$100 per rim does sound kind of expensive, but I don't know anything about powdercoating.

that's pretty normal pricing and policy to me man.. they aren't making much money off you.. powdercoaters usually don't make their money in the automotive industry on one time jobs (like your rims)

The thing is powder coating is such a simple process. All you need is a prepared surface, powder, electric current, and an oven. It's only simple if you have the proper equipment however- unless you have a friend in the industry you're going to have to pay the profit margins the shop has in place. Or find a non profit powder coating service.

I had my wheels powdercoated for $220 for all 4. I had to dismount and mount the tires of course.
As far as the tuner thing. I know I have tuned people in the summer on say 16psi, and lets say I set the fuel cut to 18 psi (wrx example here), and they beat the hell out of their cars in the winter and are hitting fuel cut and get on my case about it. I have to explain that the car is going to boost more when its 0 degrees out than when its 80...not to mention they shouldnt be going WOT at that temp anyways. Then they get mad because they cant comprehend that I do it to protect their cars.
