rebuilt Tranny

well they got my car fixed from the accident and sent it over to mechanical service to make sure everything was ok and guess what the ear on my bell housing broke clean off the tranny and was still bolted to the mount. Now they had to replace the bell housing. Car was supposed to be done wed they called and said theyre waiting on a shim kit from GM to make sure that everything lines up right. The tech said that GM requires certain parts to be manadatory replaced while doing tranny work. Im a tech but dont do tranny work ive never heard of having to shim the tranny to make sure the plate lines up?? Any ideas???

whenever you replace a case half, differential or any of the shafts the clearences have to be checked and adjusted for the proper bearing preload. too much or too little preload will cause bearing problems in a short time. this is why they need shims.

When I had to ordered my new bell housing they told me the same thing. I had them order the shim and it was not what I thought it would be. It was the aluminum spacer between the engine and trans. Fortunately I found an entire trans and did not need the bellhousing. I still used the new shim though. Figured it was a type of crush/one time use gasket or something.

i think you will find the preload is set by the crush spacer: 55352125 for the main shaft and evidently they think the alloy trans housing spacer is a crush thing it is not....anyhoo

yeah the service guy knew not what he was talking about they had to shim the endplate to make sure it wasnt to close or to far away from the bearing. Thus would cause bearing failure eventually like stated above
