Syncro Issues

Hey guys I just picked up an 05 Cobalt SS/sc about two weeks ago,
it ran fine on the test drive then the trans started having issues, when i would put it into reverse it wouldn't disengage the clutch when i pushed and i would have to hit the break and stall the car out before it hit something this would go on for about 3 or four times before the transmission would work right. I took it back and they replaced the master cylinder (good thing i bought the gm extended warranty).
But when i brought it back and the car is cold it does the same thing, however i've figured out if i push in the clutch and shift through the gears 1-2-3-4-5-R then R-5-4-3-2-1 then it doesn't have the issue (usually) to me this sounds like syncros for the trans? any ideas? i want to tell them what the need to fix so my car can finally start running normal and i can spend my time modifying it instead of driving a dealer car around...

Your first issue was a clutch release issue, that could be related to the hydraulic system(master was replaced) or the clutch itself.

If the car moves with the clutch pedal depressed, youve got a clutch issue, not synchros.

yeah thats what i originally thought, but they told me they installed a new clutch before they put it on the lot... so maybe they could have messed up on the install? i dunno, just going to keep taking it back until they get it right. think i bought a car that wasn't taken care of very well by the previous owner

Yes its highly likely that the clutch was improperly installed(more likely damaged during install)

Is having a synchro go bad a common problem here? I read somewhere that if you occasionally feel like a wall trying to shift into 2nd then you have a bad synchro...is that true?

The probably didn't replace the slave cylinder when they replaced the clutch. The slave has to be replaced whenever the clutch is replaced on these tranmissions. Either that, or they just fubar'd the clutch install itself.

Mine was every time, but i guess it could be occasionally. Take it up there anyway if its still under warranty. Better safe than sorry
