Question Weird rubbing sound when I turn, any idea's?

I think it had made the sound very slightly before I had a new tranny installed but now after having the new tranny installed I hear a loud rubbing type of sound when I turn the wheel, mostly to the right but it does it on both sides. I havent changed anything else but the tranny. 1st thing that comes to mind is the wider than stock tires rubbing but they didnt do this before the new tranny. I do plan on changing the tires to be skinnier cuz I got these wider tires for free this time so i had to use them. Would anything other than the tires cause this rubbing type of noise?

I was just worried they screwed something up on the tranny install that made my tires rub when they never used to.

Ok, thanks. I will look at the sway bar and see if there is anything that looks like rubbing. I guess i will have the wheel turned all the way when i check it to make it easier to see if theres anytouching that way.

It is probably 100% a wheel bearing (hub). They start to make rubbing noises when you're turning which when let go, starts to make that sound in a straight line.

Most good technicians can tell by jacking it up and moving it up and down and side to side I believe. I say good, because I'm not a tech, I'm just a super good parts guy who is good enough to work on his own cars, lol. I am told they can tell by the amount of play when they try and push up and down with the tire on.... but more than likely.. the hub is shot.

wheel bearings are wiered too... its like, if you turn right and its loud, the left one is bad, left and it gets loud the right side is bad... sounds about right if u heard it slightly before and it got worse now. Dont worry about changing it like NOW, it needs changed soon but you can go a pretty long time on a bad one... probably 1500-2000 miles, 100% safe...

I talked to him today while I was installing my supercharger.

He says that sometimes if you jack it up you can feel play in the wheel bearing from moving the tire around... but he said sometimes a bad hub bearing won't have any play either.

When a hub starts to go, it starts to make noise on turns and then it will slowly get worse. That is more than likely the issue.

I had the same sound that you described in my old GST and it ended up being the ball joints in the lateral control arms.

I've done probably 6 bad wheel bearings. Kinda sounds like thats your issue. You'll have a grinding noise when turning at first and it'll get worse the longer you keep driving on it. Like they said jack up the car and then try moving the wheel up and down. If it's bad you'll notice some free play with only the wheel moving.

If you had extra time and you didn't feel like spending money to see if that was it, then you could swap them from side to side. If the sound moves, then you know the hub is bad.

you can buy oem; oem "legends series" (cheaper); ac delco from a delco dealer (cheaper still); SKF by part number from a local parts store (cheaper still) I use Pontiac Grand Am wheel bearings so my part number info. is no good for you; the above sources do work however. check it out.
