Question 07 radio swap

I have an 07 LS. I have the base bowtie radio. I know this much. What I want to know is which one can I use?

Other than the pioneer system is there a 6 disc or is that only available with the Pioneer? Does the option code matter and which one is which? Refering to US8 and US9.
My whole point is which radios will swap with mine and function fine? I want at least MP3 capability and would like the 6 disc.

So if someone could tell me straight out if I can use any US8 or US9 or if it has to be a certain one I would appreciate it. And if anyone has specific part numbers of what will work that would be better.

Thanks.

dont think i'm answering your problem but there is a thread about trying to swap ss headunit into ls and its almost impossible. It might just be easier to buy a wire harness and install aftermarket HU.
I just swapped mine for the sony 610ui and it rocks- it has usb, ipod, aux, and preouts
soirry i'm ramblin

I appreciate the response even though it's not the answer I'm looking for.

I want to keep it factory for as long as possible.

I've read the threads about swapping different years, but didn't see theads about same year. Also saw the ones about trying to put the Pioneer system (amp, HU, and sub) into a car that didn't come with it. I just want to know if I can put a factory MP3 playing one in. If so which model is it? 6-disc or not.

When it eventually comes to it, I may go aftermarket. I would want a double din size HU so it looks nice w/o the "shelf" and have already decided I would go with Boston Acoustics for speakers. I just would rather keep it stock for now to finish the rest of the car(suspension/handling, then performance after that's done, then audio).

u can physiclly swap any 07+ radios... pioneer packaged radios will have less "power" output at the speakers. so is there an mp3 one with power? i dont know honestly but ask a parts dept rep at a dealership

That info is more helpful. Thank you.

Now I just need to find out which model numbers are the Pioneer and which aren't.

Are the Pioneer units silver colored still or is everything in 07 black? Does anyone know? Or is there some way of being able to tell which is which?

Maybe I'll just buy one and hope for the best.

I wouldn't swap to the SS Radio if I were you. I'm on my 5th radio. They keep eating my CD's and not giving them back.

I completely understand your question and will try to help out as much as I can.

I've done this too and it is no problem.

I have an 07 LS.

For 07, they made 5 radios...
-Non MP3CD, Non XM, Black, Self-Powered, 4 Speakers
-MP3CD, XM, Black, Self-Powered, 4 Speakers
-MP3CD, XM, Black, Self-Powered, 4 Speakers, 6-Disc
-MP3CD, XM, Silver, Requires Factory External Amp, Pioneer Premium, 7 Speakers,
-MP3CD, XM, Silver, Requires Factory External Amp, Pioneer Premium, 7 Speakers, 6 Disc

I've gathered the reason they did this was to provide XM and on-star to the LT or even LS models without requiring them to purchase the 7 speaker premium package.

The option codes for this radio are vague. What you will need is the part number. I had them posted in another thread and I'll hunt them down and edit this to include it.

Yes, you can get a 6-disc. I've been on the hunt for one as well, hah. Luckily, a member on here hooked me up with a single-disc MP3CD radio in mint condition to hold me over until I eventually get a 6-disc. That base radio is awful, isn't it?

Also, in 08, chevy dropped the initial base radio and gave all Cobalts the nicer MP3CD + XM radio used in the 07s. So if you found anyone selling a radio from an 08 Cobalt, just as long as it is not from a Pioneer Premium 7 Speaker package, you are all set.

Lastly, you will have to go to the dealership to have the new radio reset with Tech 2 to re-learn your car's VIN which will unlock it.

I hope this helped some of the information gaps. Again I'll try to post those part numbers soon.

Edit 1)
Link to my thread about same issue. This may help with more information.
https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/electronics-audio-video-49/factory-radio-only-half-volume-what-use-74746/

It really depends on the dealership. They unlocked mine for free. I just went straight to the service manager it took them literally 5 minutes.

Still looking for those numbers.

Edit 2)
Not having any luck, called the dealer parts department and they are no help.

So here is what you should do, before you purchase the radio, make sure it is from an 07-08 Cobalt, nothing from 05-06, make sure the car it is coming from only has 4 speakers and not 7, make sure the face of it is black and not silver, make sure it has the CAT button on the right of the display and be sure to get a picture to prove it is the updated digitally tabbed interface and not the small 1 inch by 2 inch square that says cd, am or fm (you should know what I mean having the base model). Other than that, it is really just trying to find someone willing to give up their 6 disc, which may be a bit more of a challenge than a single disc. Good luck and please let us know how it goes!

^ Thank you so very much, that is exactly the info I wanted. I wonder what my dealership will charge me...I've read from $25 to 50 or so.

Also, I did see a 6-disc 07 on ebay for $40 starting bid. I was the only bidder with 14 hours left, but retracted soon after because I didn't want to spend the money if it wouldn't work. Now I'm kicking myself. That was through LKQ online. I'll have to keep my eye on ebay for a while. If I can get one for less than $100 shipped, I'll be extremely happy. I won't go aftermarket for a long time then.

I've had no issues with my stocker, but I just want the ability to play MP3's so that I don't have to switch CD's as often. I don't like using my ipod on there.

Let's keep this on topic for me please.

I think you're going to have problems with that radio though...I believe it's the radio that requires the amp so good luck. You do want an 05-06 radio from what I understand otherwise if you get an 07, you'll have to rewire a bit.
