3 15's in a cobalt!@*$

yeah so a while back i came across a good deal on some mtx thunder 5500 15's. my original plan was to re sell them and try to make some cash but i never got around to it and im tired of them sitting in my bedroom. so i started talking to a friend that has been in the car audio business for about 16 or 17 years and came up with the idea that we were going to try to cram 3 15's into the tiny trunk or my 06 cobalt cash is kinda short at the moment so im gonna have to keep my old amp for now but i think it will work just fine. i used it to push my jl w6 10's and kept it on less than half power so i wouldn't blow them. the amp is a rockford p9002 over 2000 max power, not really sure about the rms. i started on the project last night and plan on taking pics along the way. here is what i have so far.

this is my old setup, two jl w6 10's and the rockford amp. not much to look at but it gets the job done..

so the first thing i did was strip everything out of the trunk because im going to be making a custom fiberglass bottom for my box, the sides and top will be mdf but i need all the air space i can get so here goes...

next i removed the battery im going to have to relocate it behind the passenger side rear seat so i can get to it after the new box is in the car.

after getting the battery out of the car and getting all of the wires out of the way i started removing the factory battery box.about three hours later and after i tried almost everything i could think of i decided just to leave the battery box where it was and just work around it..

the next step was to line the bottom and sides of my spare tire well with aluminum foil so the fiberglass mold could be removed. i coated the area that i was going to be working on with some cheap spray on glue, then covered it with the aluminum foil.

i waited a few hours for the glue to dry good then started to lay my fiberglass matting.

i cut it up into 10x10 sheets so it would be easier to work with and mold into shape.

this is as far as i got tonight due to the temp dropping outside and me getting high off of the fiber glass resin fumes. lol.

more pics tomorrow, ill be posting pics daily till i get the project done.

Coming from someone who has problems with their ears, I wouldn't crank that to it's full potential, maybe even half, or a 1/4...ever, haha.

Looks kinda familiar

You should have laid sound deadner first so the fiberglass mold to the finished shape. You are going to put some kind of deadner in there aren't you?
If you think the balt rattled from 2 10's the rattle from 3 15's is going to drown out the music...unless of course you get some kind of dapening mat laid down.

As for the port into the cabin, yes it might sound funny iff you have 30" ports sticking up out of the box but I'm currently working on porting the whole trunk into the cabin via the holes where the 6x9's are. I hope to cut down the rattle as the air will flow through the decklid instead of against it and having the air flow into the car hit the back window and travell forward was the plan, my box is ported however and my subs face up so it works in my case .
Just something to chew on

good luck with that spun... getting enough airflow isnt easy

and even if you have the entire truck as the box it would barely make enough room for 3 15s ported. Im interested to see how this turns out thou.... id also like to see some termlab numbers too

this is true but the subs rms is only 300 each so it should be just enough. i probably forgot to mention earlier but these subs and amp are only temporary, this is really a budget build so im only using what i have for now. i will end up with three differen't 15's and 4 amps all together. once i can afford them that is also another battery and bigger alt.

as far as sound deadning material goes im going to be using some stuff that my friend uses in his old hot rods, it like rihno liner but its used for sound quality stuff. only a thin layer will be needed, so my box base will still fit fine. im also using dynamat.

im about to get back on in as soon as im done on here so wish me luck!

i just got done laying the fiberglass for the base, all i gotta do now is wait for it to dry!

if your planning on upgrading later i would just do everything now, cause then your going to have to make a different box. and 3 15's with a high rms is going to need a biggggggggg box, like more than the whole trunk
