adding extra speakers.....

I am wondering if anyone here has added extra speakers to their 7 speaker pioneer system? And I am not talking about adding extra subs. Too much bass can ruin a good system. What I am referring to is extra speakers inside the car for overall surround sound.

The reason am asking is for a while now I have been toying with the idea of adding a center speaker on the dash. Pioneer makes a nice 2.5" that fits nicely on your dash. Now I am thinking about adding 3.5" mids to the doors. So in the front you would have a center speaker for mids and highs, the two door frame mounted tweeters for highs, two 3.5" door mounted speakers for mids, and the two door mounted 6.5" for mids and bass.

In the back I was thinking of replacing the 6/9's on the rear shelf with 3 way component speakers consisting of 6.5's, 4" mids and 1" tweeters. I am also replacing the sub with a much higher end 10" sub. By the way, I have already replaced the HU with a Kenwood DVD HU.

With all of this I'll have to add an extra amp as well.

I basically got this idea from my friends audio/video system in his Lexus. He has the stalk Mark Levinson System which has 19 speakers in total. It is probably the best system I have ever heard in a car. Better that most aftermarket systems. And it only has one 8" sub. The rest of the system is made up of 6.5's, 4" 2.5" mids, and tweeters.

i havent yet... but im working on it. I was thinking about going three way but i sorta wanted to be active instead of passive crosses so that went out the window (6 channels for just the fronts is a little much for me)

anyway once i get everything done i will have 21 speakers for midbass-highs + subs (ill probably get 2 but i dont know yet)

i hope so it will be
9 25mm tweets
2 4" mid
8 6.5" mid
2 8 Midbass
and sub(s)

What 3 way setups are you looking at? and is your car manual or auto?
Honestly i would get a 3 way in the front but if you wanted one in the back i wouldnt mount them in the rear deck.

I was thinking of the JL Audio XR653-CS 3-Way Component System. It comes with a 6.5", 4", and 1" tweeter. The problem is where to mount the 4" mid in the front doors. It will have to be allot of custom work. A few people have told me not to put components in the back. So I might just put some JL 2 way coaxial 6/9's in the rear shelf and some 4" mids in the rear doors. Although JL does have some nice 3 way 6/9's. By the way, my car is a 4 door LT. And it's automatic.

lol.... should i comment on this....... ok i will
Pioneer 1"tweets and 6.5 inch rockford sub for in car center channel
trunk lid kicker components 5.25 inches also center channel
Alpine Type R Components in doors, Kicker 3.5 coaxials in front pillars, rockford 4 inch coaxials in sides of center console, blaupunkt 3.5 coaxials under hood (shows only), blaupunkt 5.25 components in rear pillars, and Alpine 6.5 inch type are coax. in rear deck
2 alpine type r 12's for bass.......... Using an alpine MRP320 for the center channel, and small sub, polk/momo 400/4 for all the front speakers, and a JL e4300 for all the rear speakers. Also running the subs with a 500/1. still have to get the rest of the speakers in the car to adjust the equalizers, but with the ones in there now, movies sound more in suround sound than my dads $4000 system at his house.....

Yeah that is an option to. Putting it in the kick panel would be allot easier that mounting it in the doors I guess.

also putting the 4 in the kick will give you better sound because the distance between the 2 speakers is closer

Actually I just checked the kick panel in my LT and noticed that on the drivers side the hood release lever sits very low and would make it really hard to put speakers in there.

hmm ive never checked that... since i have manual there isnt enough space anyway so i didnt really look that hard. sry (but having the mids in the kick would give you the best sound)

Replace your stock speakers with some higher end speakers, maybe add a amp if you want. add an aftermarket sub and amp and you are set. I have 1 12" kicker L5 and it sounds awsome, next I will upgrade the stock speakers.

I think adding more speakers (if i remember correctly) it just adds more noise into the car if you honestly want better louder sound a 4 channel amp and better/newer speakers would be the way to go

check out Focal FTW

Seems like a really cool project. I'd like to see the pics when the job is complete.

I agree to what your saying in some sense. However, by properly adding a set of 4" or 3.5 inch mids to your system you can really add to sound quality. Also by adding a center speaker. I believe with a good system you should be able to play any type of music and make it sound great. That is why when allot of guys overload their cars with subs they are limiting their systems overall sound quality. Thats OK if all you want to listen to is Rap and HipHop. But imagine playing a Mozart symphony, or playing a Jazz CD. It would sound like crap. So regardless if your playing Rap, HipHop, Dance, RnB, Rock, Country or Classical, your system should complement all types of music.

Speaking of focal, check out these 3 way components: http://www.utopia-be.com/Products/Number7.htm

adding a set of 4 or 3.5s for mids are fine just make sure they come as a component set or make sure you have the crossover that can handle it. With the center speaker make sure you have a Deck/amp that can actually handle that also you dont want a cd player thats set up for front/rear left/right and throw a middle speaker into the middle that may throw off the sound. the utopia-be's are awesome so are there k2power stuff there a little more affordable then there utopia-be's. However i will vouche for the utopia's i helped a friend install them and i wanted to cry because of mozart's syphonies and bethovens syphonies.

you can have great sound easily..... i have a lot of speakers because its a show car, but with a 2 amps, and either a deck with a good eq on it, or an aftermarket eq, using 4 speakers, and 1-2 subs, you can have great sound. Its all a matter of preferance, personally, id pull all the stock speakers out, run a good set of 6.5 components in the front doors, and a good set of 6.5 components in the rear. Kicker has really good components, they are convertable, so you can mount them any way youd like, the tweeter can be screwed into the mid-bass for a tight fit, or you can mount the tweeter seperately. All you need is around 300 watts, which is what 75 rms per channel, and 80 % of whatever the rms of your subs is, if you have 2 500 watts rms subs, run an 800 watt rms amp. Anything is better than stock 6x9's, they are trash, and distort easily. I have read multiple books on designing systems, and they all say the same thing. EQ's are a very important piece, and make sure you have cross-overs. Also make sure your wiring is adequate for the applications aswell. If you want it to be good, do it right the first time, JL has amazing amplifiers, and for the prices, you get what you pay for. It's kinda up to your budget man, Personally, I want the new JL subs that are comming out, they are like 3 inches deep, and they would be hot in custom boxes under the seats. If you have questions or anything pm or im me.......

hey if you decide to go 3way up front and dont buy an actual 3 way i do have the midbass crossover from my 3 way FNQ's that i wont be using. I dont think i could get that much for it on ebay since the 3ways were so rare. (funny thing is ive seen a set go for +600 on ebay since they are so rare and supposivly they sound so good as 3way but i wont be using them as 3 ways)

hey ital... i clicked to view more pics from you on webshots and damn... how do you like those speakers in the center vs the door or kick. Is that your dedicated center channel? and hose the bass on that HE woofer. Looks like its the 8" version right not the 6.5

oh hey this might sound a lil odd but how do you like the ac controls on the ssr vs the ones on the cobalt?
