Aftermarket Radio Install

What kind of cobalt do you have? do you have the pioneer system? If so, you are in for some headaches with the wiring. As for actually getting it out, its easy:
Remove the trim panel above the glovebox (spring clips)
Remove the trim panel to the right of the steering wheel with the DIC buttons (spring clips)
Remove the radio bezel (spring clips)
Unscrew the 4 9mm radio screws
Remove the radio

The Cobalt does indeed use GMLAN instead of Class2 communications, but that is not why you dont need to relocate it, the Cobalt radio currently doesnt control or interface with any vehicle systems other than for its own use....(whereas the Z cars have the DIC in the radio....) you wil lose the Speed Compensated Volume, the Theftlok feature, and unless someone has come up with an adapter, the redundant steering wheel controls. Also of note is that the radio uses GMLAN for illumination dimming purposes....you may need to tap into one of the analog dimming circuits in the vehicle to operate an aftermarket head unit.

I have been told that I will lose my XM usage even if the aftermarket deck is XM compatible, and that I will possibly lose the use of the Pioneer subwoofer in the trunk. Does anyone know anything about this?

jeesus, if you have the pioneer system in the car with the stock radio I think it works just fine in my opinon , I'd say leave it. Unless your going to totally change the audio system out putting an aftermarket cd deck in won't reap in any benefits.
If your like me the Supercharger or the sound of the exhaust is all you need.

You might want to check out this post by Maven. It's the radio pin outs. It doesn't mean a whole lot to me but it might help your installer if your taking it to a radio shop.

While the pinouts may be useful to your installer to help them allow you to keep use of your factory subwoofer, XM will NOT work with any other head unit than original nor will the XM receiver work in any other car.
