AVIC-N2 Install Questions

So my work decided to buy me a GPS unit, I talked them into an Avic-N2 for my Base cobalt with voice control! I ordered it online and took my car to Best Buy because I didn’t really want to deal with the install. I was kind of surprised when the Best Buy Tech told me he refuses to install the head unit in my car... I asked why and he said the last cobalt they did cost them 300 dollars to get the customers computer reprogrammed... so anyways, I googled this issue and found this site and decided that I want to try the install myself. I installed a few head units before but one question I had out there for any GM guru is what color or line is the Speed Control sensor wire coming off the computer? (Pioneer calls it the Car Speed Signal Input) The avic wants to tap into it… also does anyone have any suggestions before I do the install it seems like everyone’s advice is to buy the crutchfield wire harness and to tap off the windshield wipers for power? Again, I just have the 05 base with out the volume controls on the wheel and NOT the pioneer factory unit.

The wiring harness should take care of everything. You have to do the bypass mod so you can watch dvd while the car is in motion.

nevermind,

AVIC-N2 lockout bypass: Underneath the MAIN unit (not the hideaway) is a small silver sticker, peel this back. There are two contacts with the label "R197". Drop a bit of solder between these to connect them. Also, you must ground the Parking Brake wire.

BEST BUY SUCKS ... Last yr when we had our 05' Cavi I went to buy a head unit and XM for the car. I picked everything out and it totalled like $350. Which wasnt bad. the sales guy then started playing with the numbers for installation and it was goin to be more than all the **** i was buying. They were all untrained there... (at least the one I went to) I ended up goin to Fry's Electronics and buying the harness and installing it myself.. It was a paying in the ass taking the whole dash apart, but I managed to get everything done and working right. But I dont trust the guys there anymore. Rather do it all myself.

The best buy that is near me has one of the best installers around as the manager. You can't really say that all best buy's suck, it just depends who works there

Ok, I will finally have time to install this damn thing on Saturday I will get some pics up. I have still have not found out where to hook the Speed Control sensor up too? And I must say this Crutchfield is one awesome site not only did they have the speaker and wiring harnesses they sent detailed instructions of an install on a cobalt with pictures for both the head unit and taking apart the doors and rare to get to the speakers... I liked that company so much that I went back and ordered Infinity Kappa 462.7cfp 2-ways and Infinity Kappa 693.7i 3-Ways

Guys the pictures suck because I took them with a phone but here you are...

I was amazed how easy it was to get to the radio and take it out... 20min job but... because I had to run the MIC, GPS and Speed sensor lines I had to rip it all apart.. Not fun took 2 hours.

If you look down in there you can see the massive amount of wires for the avic n2 and some coming out of the glove box that connect to the hide away.

wow was this a tight fit if it was about 1mm longer it would have never fit all the way back.

Snapping the dash back together

This isn’t the best place for the hide away but it’s easy to get to. I was thinking about putting it in the trunk but the antenna line was not long enough.

Slick little fuse adapter feeding off the windshield wiper fuse

All done! gps working

my 17'' enkei GF1s with Yokohama tires

As for the Speed sensor I tapped off the Green/white wire that feeds to the dash gauges but its not working… so I am still lost on where to tap this line into. Speaker install next Saturday.

I am going to be getting the Pioneer Z1 system this summer. I hate the look of single din units that popout, looks tacky to me. I want something that is a double-DIN and flush. OEM look. Pioneer finally answered my question.

Hopefully someone on here will get it before me so I can get an idea of what it looks like.

if your co. paid for the head unit you should of just got it installed at a audio shop and sent the bill to them instead of you spending your own time and what not. But you got it in so its cool man. Came out great . you should make a detailed how to on that. keep up the good work

I wish I could have had someone do it but I don’t regret doing it myself... it’s always good to get my hands dirty and burned on a soldering iron. As for the double DIN units I think it maybe be down to low in cobalt I could be wrong but the viewing angel would be hard to get use too..

FYI,
I did tap into the right line for the speed detection sensor that feeds to the hide away it’s the Green/White wire that runs to the dash gauges. The avic has a display speedometer gauge its pretty f***ing sweet here is another crappy pic.

only if you ran an aftermarket amp, other wise the speakers hook up with the wiring harness, all you have to do is match the wires from the aftermarket deck, to the harness that plugs into the stock harness......
