Basic amp w/sub install problem

I am trying to install an amp with two 12"s in my car (car has Pioneer system) and for some reason my speakers arent hitting at all like they should. I am leaving the stock deck in and just want to hook up the subs. Is there anything specific that needs to be done prior?

I have a 1000 watt sony xplode amp with 2 rockford fosgate 12's. As for the signal, I initially tried diffferent combos of connections off of the stock rear speakers not really knowing which were + or -. I didnt splice any wires, I simply wrapped wires around the exposed speaker wires (I know its ghetto). Then I tried getting signal off of the Pioneer sub harness and had the same crappy results. When you mention "high low converter" are you talking about the amp low pass and high pass filter? When I got a signal, I had the amp turned up about half way and the stereo bass all the way. I ended up turning the amp and bass all the way up and knew that something was up. I shouldnt have to turn both all the way up, I had the subs installed in my old Sunfire with a smaller amp and it hit like a champ. You'll have to forgive me, I am not an expert nor am I advanced in amp/sub installation. I just know the basics...I guess.

Do I need a line out converter or something?

the high low converter is a little box that you attach a splice of your speakers wires to, it then converts that signal to "low level" output which is delivered to the amp via RCA cables... you can getone at walmart for under 20bucks, i believe its called Scosche Line output converter, and i would tap into the rear speaker wires...
