Bluetooth/USB radio

So i've been researching and looking around the posts here wondering if this can be done but have not found a concrete answer.

I have an 07 cobalt with the AUX jack and no onstar. From what I know off, the radio can be swapped with another one with the USB port and the dealer just has to reprogram it to unlock it for your car to see it. The the car can use USB sticks/ipod/iphone to play music.

In terms of getting bluetooth, does the car need to have the onstar system for it to work? I have the XM radio if that makes any difference. Is it possible to get a bluetooth module for the newer car radio to see it?

As a second workaround, could the rearview mirror be swapped with a different unit, one with bluetooth and perhaps autodimming. I have heard that there are problems when speaking to other people using this method since the mic can't hear your voice when you are going faster than 80km/h (50mph).

Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.

Doing the swap to get the USB port is easy, bluetooth isn't. You'd have to get an OnStar module, and also the microphone and wiring for it, and possibly the mirror. No idea if installing an OnStar module in a vehicle that doesn't have it will actually work or not.

For all that trouble, why not just install an aftermarket deck. My Kenwood has all of those options and I got it on closeout for $250

For the USB HU swap, I heard that GM is no longer making silver plates and is now making them with only black plates. Would you have any idea where I could get a silver one?

I want to keep my car stock looking, just in case I ever run into the need to sell it down the road.

If you avoid hacking the stock harness then there shouldn't be an issue. It would be plug and play to take an aftermarket deck out to put the stock deck back in.

sounds good,

i saw your post on that bluetooth retrofit post. Did you get that working for you? From what I understood, you could buy that module and wire a mic to the front.

thanks for the heads up. I found a USB radio last night so it should be on its way soon.

I'll see what I can figure out with the electronics and bluetooth and keep you posted if anything comes up.
