I have an 08 LT with normal speakers and I want to put 2 12's in my trunk but I cant figure out if I should also buy speakers , and a head unit the guy at circuit city says that It will sound like **** with the stock head unit and I wont be able to go very loud ( is this true??) also he said that with the factory speakers it will sound like **** , WELL I have enough dough for speakers and subs and amp or just amp subs and a headunit , which way should i go? or should i wait till i can get it all.

Not a Sebring
For the most part, aftermarket head units will overpower stock speakers (and sound like crap) and factory head units will underpower aftermarket speakers (and sound like crap). This was the case in my '88 RX-7. However, newer cars like the Cobalts which come factory with nice speakers might be a different story.

I'd recommend saving some money to get all the goodies. Head unit, amp, Sub and speakers. The stock speakers may sound good, but if you just install a sub your whole system will sound like crap. My buddy has a 98 Lexus with stock HU and speaker with aftermarket sub and sounds really bad. If you just want bass that go ahead and install the sub only. But for graet clarity and power invest in a head unit and good aftermarket speakers.

Agreed
I do suggest replacing the HU as well as adding an amp and subs but the stock speakers will sound alright. When I first did my system I just added a sub amp and HU and it sounded pretty good, at the time I thought it sounded great, but now that I have upgraded I have something to compare with...between you and me it wasn't needed but I think I have O.C.D. so I couldn't stop my self

Dont forget to get a good quality amp for your midrange speakers....ive become a fan of the rockfordfosgate punch amps...they are WAY under rated for power, they are exceptionally small and they sound amazing......if you just focus on bass you will end up with a drowned out front stage...i always run my door speakers on an amp....for the extra 300 bucks they cost the improved sound quality is well worth it IMHO. but im a sucker for feeling a snare drum rim shot and that "right there in front of you" sound quality.

Old School PPI, huh?
Art Series?
I have a old school A600.2 sitting in my closet, along with a couple A/D/S Power plates and an old PQ-8, along with a whole other assortment of amps. I'm just a fan of the old school and can't bring myself to sell any of it. None of it seems to fit into the system, I wantd to use the 600.2 to run a set of 8"midbass drivers but that idea got scraped
Those old PPI's are great, and I'd love to be able to hear a set of those old PPI flat 10" subs again.
