got a free l7
i ordered 2 4 ohm l7s and got them in the mail yesturday, now hypothetically if i recieved a 3rd l7 (2 ohm) for free, what could I do with it? I basically have the 4 ohms ones wired at 1 ohm and my amp couldnt power a 3rd l7 anyways. and i dont think i would have enough room for another in my trunk anyways, except a crazy custom box...
should I just buy another amp that does 750w at 2 ohms and throw it in a box and put it in my backseat?
the company may or may not call and ask for it back but well cross that road when it comes.
thanks
WHAT I WANT TO DO:
option 1: get all the l7's somehow changed to the same ohm either 2 or 4, then wire them to a bigger amp and call it a day
option 2: buy a zx750 and wire it to the 2 ohm sub, i already have most of the power wiring and rca's all i would need is some speaker wire
I just sent a PM to emp about this but I want opinions, do you think I could fit a 13.5x13.5x36 box in the balt trunk? seems like it would take forever but it should go in if my measurments were correct...thats 1 cube each in a sealed box for all 3 subs
also is there anything wrong with running the subs off 2 different amps? i know the subsonic filters will probably be different and what not, but as long as i set the xover freq to the same and match the gain i should be alright? right?
lastly, can i just tap in to the remote wire coming from my first amp to power the 2nd amp?
thankss

It's the right thing to do, but who cares.

wow, a free l7 ay? sell that puppy. or...
you could series wire the dual coils on the 4ohms to make them 8ohms, then run the 2 8ohm loaded l7s in parallel so they each get appear 4 ohms. then, wire the 2 ohm in series as a 4 ohm load. throw that on your amp and it would then see 3x 4ohm loads in parallel, your amp would be running @ 1.333 ohms. that could work. i doubt you'd have to push your amp hard, kick back the gains a bit. your skull will implode b4 your amp goes into protect, providing it handles 2ohms well
actually, i take that back. you'd technically have 2 8ohm subs and 1 4ohm sub. i broke it down wrong, my bad. the 2ohm sub would get twice the power, so scratch that. sell it
wait until you know if you have to send it back, then sell it if you can
you're only option to run all 3 with equal ohms is to series parallel the 2 4ohms, and series in the 2ohm = 12ohms / 3 = 4ohm load on the amp. not worth it

i know for a fact it wont go through the trunk opening, what i could do is slide it in through the back seats and have all 3 facing up at the very back on the trunk so its pointing up at the trunk lid, right in that area it would fit.

what do those l7's like to operate at btw? x3, you'd need an amp to push x3 the rms of all 3 combined and @ 4ohms. in which case you'd have better bass with just the 2 subs @ 1ohm since your amp is putting out a tad less than 4x the wattage at 1/4 the ohm. you'd need a much bigger amp to use that sub.
sell it and buy a 3rd 4ohm l7. run em in parallel for a .66 ohm load on your amp, or series-parallel the 3 4ohmers into a 2.66 ohm load. whatever tickles your fancy.
how wide are our trunks anyways?
lmao. try it out!

do you guys think 3 l7s in a sealed will be louder than 2 l7s in a ported?

you'd need a bgger amp to power all 3, plain and simple. as for how you power em is up to you of course tho
3 sealed will sound much better than 2 ported. 2 ported will be loud, those l7's are beasts. square cone ftw. but hell, if you were looking for SQ you wouldn't have l7's right?
what do they each require when ported? i assume you're dealing with 12"s, you didn't specify. if the box is 36" wide, you can fit 3 right next to each other and have em touch, it'd be a major bitch to build the box but it's doable. the site says when sealed they need .88 to 2.0^3 a piece so 1 is a bit on the small side, but again doable.
the 2nd amp to power the 3rd sub is an idea so long as it's the same brand of amp with similar features. different amps have different THD (total harmonic distortion) values, and different subsonic filter features, the crossovers aren't exactly the same, etc. better off going for 1 big amp to power em all. less amps, less metal and electronics to run, less power lost to heat... and less wires to run
best bet would be to sell the 3rd l7 for $$ for box building material. run the 2l7's off your 1 amp as is, and if the box is ported and tuned right, you will love it. tune it in the low to mid 30's and call it a day. those things will shine at low hz so no need to tune ridiculously low like 26hz, they'll sound like garbage and won't keep up with any double bass.
is your trunk sound deadened? do you know how to make and design boxes? it's relevent info in regards to your final setup. i can design a box for you if you want, i'm going to work in a bit i work for an audio entertainment company and between setups for the wedding equipment, i eat drink and bullshit for nearly 4 hours hah. i can design one for you, just g2g measure my trunk and get some dimensions. post back ill check up b4 work, ciao

the box for all 3 would be 1 cube for each l7. it is a prefab too btw!
and right now the box im using is a ported prefab tuned high..
and yea i have some damplifier pro in the trunk but am looking to buy some more so i can have 100% coverage in the trunk
also, if i went with the 2nd amp it would be a different brand than my bigger one (rockford t1k, 2nd would be a kicker)
so im starting to think just sell the sub and get a custom ported box made and make it as big as I can (kicker says 1.75 to 3.25 cubes per sub) and right now I only have 2 cubes per sub

you have 2 cubes per sub ported now? what is the box tuned at
yea, prefabs are nice but they aren't designed for your specific subs in mind, this you know. i assume you have a slot tuned box, they are a bit more compact than ported, though i am unsure. you could take the top off the prefab and design a new port into it, rather than start from scratch. i modded a 1x 12" prefab slot tuned box a few years back. took it from 43hz down to 32 and the IDMax I had was perfoming much better. Just an option.

3.25 per sub is on the max recommendation for highest spl, they'd sound pretty bad, but leave holes in your chest. if you went for 2.5 a piece that's right in the middle of min and max. whatever you can fit in the trunk... which is how big btw? i didn't measure.
