I need opinion on sub and amp!!
Im having an issue. I have a alpine MRP M500 running one Alpine SWR-1242d 12" Type R. Now this sub should be able to take everything this amp can give. But i am getting this smell from my sub or amp not sure which one. It smells Like some thing is melting or overheating. I am running sub at 2 ohms. And Box is 2 cubic feet, with 3" port tuned to 33 hrz. I am getting pissed everything is brand spanking new.

My gain is set at nom which is half my bass eq is set at 2 and my lp filter is all the way down. My HU has 6 volt pre outs. And the HU sub control is set at 0.

I use to run my MRP-500 off two Alpine 10' 2ohm subs. Now im running a jl w6 .. anyways point being i got a similar set up.. Your going to have to break these things in for sure. Your LP filter should be about 120(hz) your bass eq should be sitting around 8db and your gain around 0.5v to run that sub properly. What your smelling is your sub for sure this is typically just odors given off by the components when under heat and not necessarily an indication that something has been damaged..

I mean you can imagine the manufacture of alpine tests their stuff with there own product so i guess brand to brand would sound the best .. when you switch up the set like me with alpine amp/jl sub i had experience in the past n it sounds wicked but with saying that im heard some dirty combos.

Well thats what i thought my box is 2 cubic feet ported. everyone over on caraudioforum is telling me i cant turn my gain up at all or it will be clipping which i am wandering about. The amp is only 4v to .2v and my HU output is 6v. So i am very confused.

Im not trying to be a dick but. Are you freaking kidding me. How can you tell me my gain needs to be almost all the way up and everyone else is telling me to turn it down. And my cross over is always set at about 50 or so.

If your gonna be blasting it for a long time you might want to turn your gain down some 1/2 to 3/4 if it starts to smell you know the speaker is getting warm turn it down or let it cool. When i had the punch 500 hooked up to one they would get hot after a half hour or so but i normally just did competitions where it would be a 5 sec blurp.

Sounds like you need 2 12's and you could still use that amp and be able to crank it for hours. My DD set up was 2 r's and punch 500 it would consistently hit 143 db and would play for hours with no problems for the 3 years i had them. It's all in the box mine had weeks of work put in to it. I had all corners rounded with molded PVC and was urethaned it was smooth as glass. The faster you get the air out the louder its gonna be.

Reason i asked is because your amp is 2ohm stable and your sub is dual 4 ohm.. do you have it wired like soo
Subwoofer Wiring Diagrams, One 4 ohm Dual Voice Coil (DVC) Speaker
If not i would suggest changing it.
