Illumination?

okay, so i just installed my D3 and backup camera, works awesome... but the Navigation screen is always bright as the sun!

Went to avic411.com and realized i needed to hook up my illumination wire.... Witch i wanted to, but douche -Bigalo at the best buy install bay told me it was automatic, and has a sensor. So, What would be a good place to tap into for my illumination wire?

Can't answer your question but I have one for you. Did you do the install for your D3? If so then how would you rate the difficulty of install?

If you do not have experience with subs/decks and audio/video in general. I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself.

well I have installed 4 different decks in the past, so I have done it before. My concern was more to how you had to go through getting the stock deck out of the dashboard.

Theres a how to but I'll give you the quick version
1) remove the panel above the glove box, the one with SS symbol on it
2) remove the brushed aluminum piece that sits above your ignition to the left of the stock head unit
3)pull the trim from around the HU, use the top corners to get your fingers behind it
with all the dash pieces that have to taken off all you have to do is pull on them, some are tougher than others but remember to be somewhat gentle and take your time, work them out slowly
4) after you get the trim off from around the HU, (it will still be semi- attached to the heater, and heated seat controllers, just leave them and rest the trim piece on the shift boot area). You will see 4 bolts, they are a 7mm socket, and its easier if you use an extention, so your ratchet can turn freely, undo the 4 bolts and then pull the HU first down about an inch and then towwards you, chances are it will just fall right out so be prepared, sorry for the spelling but I'm in a hurry so hope this helped

So I felt bad for contributing to the thread jack and did some research, If your just looking to make the screen a bit less bright, then you have all you need. The sales guy at Best Buy wasn't exactly lying, your HU has "Dimmer Control Intelligent" it should be an option that auto ajusts the brightness of your screen, but chances are the settting for it is in the off position. I found this on page 125 of your owners manual

1 Touch “V.Adjust” in the System menu.
2 Select the desired item you want to
adjust.
• Camera — Switch to the picture adjustment
display for the rear view camera
• Source — Switch to the picture adjustment
display for the source screen
• Map — Switch to the picture adjustment
display for the map screen
❒ When the display is already on the screen,
a message to that effect appears.
Brightness — Adjust the black intensity
Contrast — Adjust the contrast
Color — Adjust the color saturation
Hue — Adjust the tone of color (red is emphasized
or green is emphasized)
Dimmer — Adjust the brightness of display
❒ Touching “Source” while adjusting the
rear view camera image returns you to the
previous screen.
❒ The adjustments of Brightness, Contrast
and Dimmer are stored separately when
your vehicle’s headlights are off (daytime)
and when your vehicle’s headlight are on
(nighttime). These are switched automatically
depending on the vehicle’s headlights
are on or off.
❒ You cannot adjust Color and Hue for the
source without a video and navigation map
display.
❒ If you select “Source”, sources without
video and sources with video are saved
separately in the memory.
❒ The picture adjustment may not be able to
be used with some rear view cameras.
❒ The same setting is selected for the normal
background picture and the navigation
map display.
❒ Because of the LCD screen characteristics,
you may not be able to adjust the
screen at low temperatures.
3 Touch “+” or “–” to adjust the selected
item.
Each time you touch “+” or “–” increases or
decreases the level of selected item. +24 to
–24 is displayed as the level is increased or
decreased.
❒ Adjust the Dimmer in the range of +1 to
+48.
4 Touch “ESC” to return to the previous
screen.

So there is a dimmer control section in your menu, just turn the brightness or the dimmer down depending on how you want the screen to look. And its not that it is in the off position, the dimmer control inteligent kicks in and out with your headlights, an added bonus when you have auto headlights

There is a special Night mode for these where it uses different colors.
