I wouldn't recommend any more people join the "Sony Club". Xplod's have a pretty bad reputation when it comes to durability. I doubt they reproduce sound accurately either with that strange shaped and lumpy cone. Subs with a more traditional speaker cone design are pretty much guaranteed to sound better.

Putting an extra helping of freaky design nonsense only adds weight to the cone and the suspension, which is like adding weight to your car.... it aint gonna go faster or move more freely. And btw all Voice coils are round so why make on octagon cone? idk you lose cone area which limits IB applications and really just efficiency no moving molecules = no sound. lets work on mechanical limitations b4 we try to conquer thermal handling.

There's no doubt that his install is awesome. I was just trying to let any newbs' know that Sony Xplod stuff isn't top notch gear. Sony has a good rep when it comes to TV's, but car audio is not one of their strengths. For any newbs' reading this, I would recommend putting a little more money into your gear and spending a bit less on a fancy install if you are on a tight budget.

from what i've heard, facing subs down will provide the most clarity and bass. meaning, the cone facing down rather than up. and i heard this from a professional at a local custom sound shop. if you've got the time, try it out and let me know if it really does work!
and as far as the sony argument goes...my friend logan has an 01 cavalier with a custom box and all sony gear. 4 12"s, 2 amps, and speakers all around. his system is louder than any other setup around here; i was in his car when he had it all the way up and i couldn't breathe. not saying that it's the BEST, necessarily, but with a proper install, sony speaker equipment can do the job just fine. i can get pics if you want to see his setup. PM me.
PS- i am not an audio guy. =)

you get what you pay for, and any equipment is good equipment or (will sound good) in its perfect application.
as far as subs facing down, there is a distance per application that has to be cleared in order for the floor not to respond like another port, there is a formula but usually eyeing it up gets pretty close. as far as it sounding different im sure its all in the room or car that its in positioning has alot to do with it, but is in no way the same for every car or truck.
say a subwoofer handles 300wrms at two ohm Thermally
say you put the sub into winisd and find that you need a box 1.5cf tuned to 30hz for ruller flat responses from 26hz-78hz
say you have a 400w amp rated at 12.5V and 2ohm, you will be putting out more than this most cars idle at 13.5V
Note the objective is to recreate a perfect sine wave from h/u through amp through speaker, so anything that boosts the signal above 0db is udually not a good thing. same goes for the amp no clipping please, your sub and amp will like you more.
adjust the h.u to 0db adjust the gain on the amp to preform roughly 300wrms adjust also the low freq. cut off to 30 unless the db slope level is low i might choose a little higher freq., this is so the subwoofer will not surpass its mechanical limits
if all this is done i gurantee the speaker will sound amazing (might not be as loud as you would like though) Also, any amp regaurdless of make model etc. will sound the exact same given that it is working within its limits of both amp sub and box application. there is a test for this thousands of people have taken it and no one have been able to tell the difference, you can even supply the gear or request gear.
and i apologize for if what i said came off as a bash to the owner, it was not. just unable to sleep last night had to wake up at 7 and i think i posted at 5:15am lols so i was a grump.
but try me on that formula for great sounding equipment. (note that different speakers in the same enclosure will sound different)
have a good one.
