Installing head unit need some help

Hey guys just bought a double din dvd player and all that good stuff for my 06 cobalt. I see on here there are a few different harness to use. My good friend that does car audio said the harness for the cobalt with the pioneer system are stupid expansive. There are about 80 bucks. And the harness number he gave me is not the same as what I have been reading. Can some one shed some light on this for me. Do I need that 80 dollar harness.

As far as double din goes, I'm not sure. I have an 06 w/ single din and I just used a reg. harness. The only need for the expensive one is if you have an 07 or up. The reason being is the DIC is integrated into the stereo, where as we (06 guys) have an independent DIC. You know the switches to the left of the stereo. Someone correct me if I'm wrong?

The DIC in my 07 does not run through the stereo, When I bought my harness the first thing the guy asked is if DIC ran through the radio, he came out to my car i showed him and he said no, the display is under my spedo, the controls are on the left hand side of the steering wheel, my brother had an 05 and his was the same. I got the impression that some had the DIC dispay through the radio, this would account for thosr adapter/mounting kits that have the lcd's at the bottom.
The RAP, the turn signals and the chimes all work through my HU, maybe this is the reason for the expensive harness in the 07's

I have yet to see a diiferent harness needed for a double din over a single din, the basic wires needed are going to be the same. A double din has a screen (most of but not all the time) so the difference would be in the amount of other things you can hook up to it, should not make a difference when it comes to the harness.

It does make a difference when it comes to the mounting kit though. The proper mounting kit for a double din HU is the Metra 95-3302, it can also be used as a double single

^^^ rap is the same in all year cars... just the turn signals and chimes thru the radio in the 07+ where as us 05-06 guys have it easy.

as i've said before somewhere (possibly in the FAQ) the reason for the mix up with the DIC is the fact the G6 and cobalt are classified together since they use the same dash kit. G6 has the DIC in the stereo the cobalt has it in the speedo but since they are classified together anyone who doesn't look at the car or hasn't had any experience will think the DIC will be disabled. Blame ignorance or the aftermarket dash kit harness companies but either way nothings going to change

Sorry, I have never actually been in an 07' +. I do know that the display shows under your tach for all the years, but I thought the CONTROLS to view/change things in the DIC were in the stereo for 07' and up? Where as 05,06 have the controls ( 2 buttons, opposite to brightness, fog lights) to the right of the steering wheel. This is the need for the $100 harness/Mounting kit? It includes the 2 buttons and a small LCD screen.

I think what Emp. was saying was that thosekits with the screens are for the G6's but the aftermaket world lumped the G6 and the Cobalt into one category.

The $100 -$150 harness (depends on where you buy it) is the GMOS LAN 04 made by a sub company of Metra called Axxess.
The OG poster has a 06 Cobalt so he won't need the expensive harness, the cheap one, the double din mounting kit, and the GM ant. adapter should be what he needs.

Oh yeah he's going to need alot of patience (lol)
No I'm just kidding, if you wire the harness into the HU's harness outside the car, with the exception of the ACC wire that needs to be run, the rest is plug and play, with 4 screws somewhere in there.

Correct (along with the rest but just quoted the important part)

got the HU it and ever things seems to be working great. The HU is an XO Vision model xod1742bt any body have this unit or know anybody who does. Need to know how to by pass the safety feature for the DVD. Last unit I did which was a dual all I had to do was ground the brake wire out. This unit has a fuse on the brake wire, not sure if it needs to be hook to + or what. Also when you press any botton weather you are turning the volume up or down or search through station the tone beep is very loud, any body else have this problem. Not sure if I can do any thing about it, thanks for the help guys. Let me know if any body else has this HU
