mmmm Head Up Display anyone? haha
So after digging high and low for HUD information.... ya know Corvette/Bonneville style which projects onto the windshield?
I've found out that installing those very setups into other vehicles can be quite easy.
i may end up trying this out.
someone care to beat me to it? haha

i've even seen a thread with a old honda prelude guy getting the thing working perfect in his car.
so i'd imagine this wouldn't be so far off.
does anyone by chance have the stock cobalt guage cluster pinout?? ls and ss?

I could be wrong on this guys, but I'm pretty sure there's a coating that has to be on the glass for the HUD to display properly. My fiance's mom has a GP GTP with the HUD and replacing the windshield in her car was like twice normal cost because of this....at least that's what she told me anyway. If this is incorrect information, i apologize. Either way tho, if this gets done I'd love to see it.

I've owned/own three W-body cars over the years (two Cutlass Supreme and my Turbo Grand Prix) that have had the HUD option. It was originally developed by Hughes for GM in the late '80s before they sold that division. They did come with a special windshield that has a small square of semi-metallic translucent film in the laminate between the glass that helps reflect the vacuum flourescent display of the HUD. It will still work with the regular windshield but it's a little less clear.
How do you, or did you, like the turbo spirit and shelby? I wanted to get my hands on one of those soooooo bad but can't ever find them around here. One guy "collects" them you could say, but he never sells them, no matter what condition they're in. He's got one of those rare factory intercooled, t-topped shelby cars....at least I'm told its rare anyway...

That's what it looks like on the windshield. Cant be seen from outside. Really nifty, but when driving a car with it actually turned on, I found it to be distracting and annoying.

I fall under the camp of the HUD being one of the best things ever put into a car. Well, not quite, but I love driving with it, especially at night when I'll shut off the backlighting on the regular instrument panel and only use the HUD.
I still have all the cars. The R/Ts (including the Spirit) were low 14-second cars stock and take well to upgrades. My Daytona Shelby is also a T-top, Turbo II (intercooled) 5-speed car and while not the most common I wouldn't call them super rare with just under 2k T-top cars made the last year in '89 before that option was dropped. If you keep an eye out you can still run across the older turbo Dodges but clean cars are getting hard to come by.

yea, i figure if folks with honda preludes can get it working just connecting the wires to the appropriate lines, we have to be able to.
as for the reflectiveness folks. turns out plenty of non-hud equipped cars can use it, the reflectiveness on the hud-equipped GM cars is only a couple percent more than regular issue glass.

Plus you can get a film you can apply to make it more visible if you really need it.
But anyhow, I'd imagine there are HUD kits that would plug into the OBD II port to get the necessary information. I'd imagine the biggest issue with installing a HUD in the Cobalt is space and the fact that you would need to modify the dash (As opposed to the Grand Prix where you could just buy the dash that already has the provisions for the HUD.)
