Need help with new speakers

Hello, I am looking into getting new speakers for my 2008 Cobalt LS.

I don't really know anything at all about cars but I wanted to get new speakers as well as a subwoofer.

I didn't really want to replace the head unit cause I heard you need some expensive adapter or something.

My questions are:

If i got new speakers without getting a new head unit, would it not really make a difference.

Can you recommend me a decent setup (speakers and sub / amp?) for around 300-400$ that would make a difference above the factory speakers?

Replacing the stock head unit is your first step. The stock one doesn't put out enough power or have decent hookups for a sub

So would I be required to get that adapter/harness thing?

I don't believe it is but you will lose control of steering wheel controls and chimes and stuff. Not really a big deal.

you don't have to swap out the hu. and will the bs you 08 guys have to deal with i wouldn't **** with it anyway. Yes ultimately swapping it for a stereo that has sub control is the best way to do it along with the bullshit gm lan adapter but if ur just looking for bass and swapping out door speakers i wouldn't **** with the hu

now with that said $400 for a hu, 4 midrange speakers, an amp and sub/box. is going to give you complete garbage of equipment and there's no way in hell you would get it installed especially with the module adapter for that price. even the worst crap made on earth (which is what ud get in this package)
$400 for speakers and amp and box can get you decent speakers and a small bass package possibly the install as well but that's iffy
$400 for speakers will give you good quality speakers with real nice sound installed or $400 for bass will get you something decent/good depending on what all you get and if you can get any specials/deals... oh or you could spend $400 on a good deck with the module harness/install

pick your poison

Your right i used the line out crossover straight to my amp, the max money you might spend is about $200 and mine sounds good everything is pioneer including my amp 400W , if you want to add sound just use the line out converter it taps into the speaker wire and ouputs to amp it will cost you about $20

I just put in an eclipse avn 6610 double din and i hooked it up with the cheaper harness in my 06 cobalt. Before i had taken out the stock sub and put in a pioneer premier 10", one of the best slim subs, made absolutely no difference. but when i put that new double din in..... SOOOOOOOOOo much louder and clearer on sub and every speaker.

dont buy the addapter if u are buying a new amp all u would need to do is eather run new wires to the speakers or use the crappy 24gauge wire thats already running to them and a set of rca cables to the back.. the only addapter u will need to buy is the one 4 the antenna.... just watch with any unit u buy cause the car dosenot use acc for the system it uses a data singnle but all u need to do is tap eather in to 1 of the 2 small brown wires runninbg from the ds bcm or the 1 thick pink wire test it first cause 1 is 12vc on ps bcm ....then its simple
