Two 4 ohm DVC subs, yes Wire the voice coils in series then the subs in parallel bridged to the amp

As I already had everything apart I wired my working clarion in parallel and it's quite a bit better
Can't wait to get my kickers going.

This best buy installer says "I can run the whole thing in series with the two ohm speakers and it'd be the same thing. I do this all the time." does he know what the hell he's talking about?

The "whole thing" in series would be 8 ohm final load. Yes, you "could" run that bridged to the amp, but the amp would only put out half the power!

I never like running subs in series, voice coils only!

Thanks for all the input, guys. Yeah this local audio shop verified that that bestbuy guy is a jackass. This shop is gonna set me up with two 4ohm cvr's and a new PORTED box all installed for $400. He also said he's got a pair of pioneer champion subs that he likes that he could do for like $40 cheaper.

As was mentioned before, you said you listen to some serious drum beat music, I'm not sure ported is the way you want to go!!

Pioneer TS-W309D4. Looks like an "OK" sub. $59 from Sonic with free shipping! (might be $8 cheaper at Amazon, but was not sure if it included shipping!)
Pioneer TS-W309D4 (TSW309D4) 12" Dual 4 Ohm Champion Subwoofer

Found a nice ported box for $56: http://www.amazon.com/Absolute-VEGD1...9947340&sr=8-4

So that'd be $174 total for two Pioneer subs and a nice dual 12" box! Simple to screw the speakers in yourself with $1 in screws and $4 in some wire and connectors! "$185" for the shop to "install" it for you doesn't seem like too great a deal

Lets compare the two shall we (all prices include free shipping):

TS-W309D4
Price: $60
RMS: 400
Sensitivity: 94 dB
Xmax [mm]: 11.5

CVR124
Price: $81
RMS: 400
Sensitivity: 86.7 dB
Xmax [mm]: 12.64

My pick for around $60:
HiFonics Brutus BRZ12D4
Price: $58
RMS: 600
Sensitivity: 86 dB
Xmax [mm]: 15

It's hard to find anyone that says thing bad about the Kicker. The Pioneer some people said the sub clips too easy, have to keep the volume down or it'll blow. The sensitivity is too high with too small an Xmax when feeding it with 400rms. Should be fine on less power or with a very restrictive subsonic filter setting: *NOTE* Your Punch 800 amp does NOT have ANY type of subsonic filter at all, adjustable or pre-set!!! User manual for your amp: http://a248.e.akamai.net/pix.crutchf...5/575100A2.PDF

Either of the subs you were looking at on a ported box with your amp won't last long if you abuse them, the HiFonics one I linked would do way better.

Take what you bought back and order from Amazon/Sonic and save some serious $$$

My vote is the two $58 BRZ12D4 subs in your existing sealed box! Some serious thump for the type of music you like to listen to!

Damnit, tafb! I thought I was all set lol. Now of course I want to save money if I can...will a ported box really affect the subs lifespan?

With no subsonic filter? ABSOLUTELY! It's complicated to explain

A sealed box has better "power handling" than a ported box. So if you're feeding subs their max rated RMS usually sealed is where you want to be! The HiFonics sub I linked would be better than the other two in a ported box (not to say it wouldn't absolutely chatter your teeth in a sealed box!) because you're only driving it to 66% of it's power rating, it has a good xmax of 15mm and it has crappy efficiency/sensitivity.

When pushing subs near their limit in a ported box you have to be VERY careful of VERY low frequency sounds (anything under what the box is tuned for, but for now lets say very low is under 30hz). Because it's below the box's tuned frequency the box has NO control holding the speaker back, as if it was playing in free air with no box!! The cone might launch itself right out of the speaker, permanently!

Of course, not just bass test tracks (i.e. Bassotronics, Bass I love you) have retarded low notes, lots of rap/r&b songs do (i.e. Tyga - Rack City, Waka Flocka Flame - No Hands, etc.) and even random wacky songs do, frequencies of like 10hz (you can't hear it, but if you watch your subs you can see it!), so now your amp has to push all this power trying to make this super low note you're not going to be able to hear anyway, in a ported enclosure with no control = KABOOM to the speaker!

To combat this amps started coming with a built in subsonic filter. You generally set it a hair below the tuning of your ported box to block out those super low frequency sounds. Your amp does less work and stays cooler, same deal with the sub too.

In a sealed box the sub is restricted to how far it can move by the volume of the sealed box. 95% of the time sealed boxes never need to use subsonic filters, the compression/vacuum of the box will control the cone at low frequencies which means you can push it with more power and play it louder without the sub breaking a leg.

The frequency response of a sealed box is wider than a ported box. Ported boxes are designed to be VERY loud, but only over a narrow frequency range. Sealed boxes are a little less loud but over a wider range, so with sealed you get more of that drum hit, and still the rumble of that low bass guitar.

If you told me you listen to 90% rap music and just wanted to show your friends how far you can bounce a quarter off your trunk I'd say go ported, but from what you described I think you're a sealed guy

I say order those HiFonics subs. Drop them in your sealed box and let her rip. I guarantee you at 800 watts RMS it's going to blur your vision Later on down the road when it doesn't seem as loud anymore swap out the sealed box for a ported box for $50 and swap your amp for a used JL 1000/1 for $300 and it'd be like you upgraded your pair of 12's to 15's!

even if that wasnt the case that box wouldn't be a good idea for the kickers anyway. port is too small

and no offence but take that post #61 with a gain of salt. its not wrong but there are a few things i would disagree with

^ Very true, but its been my experience that 9 times outta 10 you'll get much better SQ and be as loud or close with one quality sub vs two cheapies

The only other thing is I haven't touched my stock set-up...
Would I be fine just unplugging the stock sub and taking it out?

Yep! You're going to be using the pair of wires going to the sub to feed your new amp! Make sure you mark the pairs going to each voice coil in the sub (four wires run to it total).
