Oil Life Meter Question

i wasnt sure which section to put this in, but anyway i got to wondering if the meter acutually can tell how good the oil is or if it just estimates by when you reset it. has anyone tried resetting it without changing the oil? id like to know before i try

Its just a computer estimate based on your driving habits and miles driven. Probably safe to change around 20% if you want to keep your car running good for a long time.

I need to change my oil this weekend. If I had a gauge, it would say -10%

yeah i dont ever trust the oil life estimator. your better off to just remember when you changed your oil and then change it every certain amount of km... miles for you i guess hey haha. but for me i just do it every 5000 kms and that makes it easy to remember and guarantees that your engine stays in great shape.

Oil life monitor algorithm has been around since the 80s, my boss is friends with the lady who originally came up with it. It has been functional for a long while but it took a long time for GM brass to sign up to full functionality. Originally they didn't want it, then they had it in limited capacity (use monitor up until ~5k miles then recommend service, now its fully implemented). It's been proven out to work with a high degree of accuracy, GM isn't gonna **** around with **** that doesn't work, they don't want to put something in there that causes the motor to get fucked up causing you to get pissed and never buy GM again.

I'd say stick with changing it the recommended amount (either 3k or 5k miles) just to be safe.

3k is the old tech way when engine tolerances were less and the quality of was less. Now we have syntethic and better engine's. Shop only reccomend 3k because it brings the customers back more often making them more money.

I change mine when the meter reads around 20% and use mobile 1 synthetic and i have found that its prretty accurate and I usually get around 7k on the oil before the meter gets to this point. Have been going by that rule of thumb for 3 yrs and haven't had any problems

They just put that **** there so people will think they have to go to the dealer to have it reset.Sure its in the manual how to reset it,but how many people actually read the manual?
