If you are going to get a radar detector and you live in VA you need to get one that can't be detected by the cops, who have detector detectors. Also, mounting it low and in the corner, like the pics here hurt the effectiveness of the radar detector. To get the best performance, it has to be mounted high up, preferably in the middle of the windshield.

Also shows Engine codes and can clear CELs

I have it tapped off the front cigarette lighter, with a switch in the Trunk Pop compartment

Anyways, for Virginia, many of the people running radar in that state will modify a visor organizer to hide their detectors. Obviously this requires a stealthy hardwire and mounting to the visor. Make sure to have a kill switch wired to it just in case you do get pulled over... sometimes Virginia cops will leave their radar on to let them hear any detectors when they walk up to your car.

Is this a Virginia-specific thing (and maybe other states), having to hide your detectors? I've got mine planted in the middle of my windshield (really obvious to anybody). I read that it's technically a "receiver," and since the FCC allows civilians to receive ANY radio-frequency broadcast, it's not illegal to have them. However, I also read that a cop CAN confiscate it (then again, they can do pretty much anything they want...), so you just don't argue and you can get it back later. That is, as long as you're not in jail.
Oh, and I've got an Ultra-Gauge as well. I've got the 1st-gen (Sept. '10), so it's got a few bugs like not always turning off when it's supposed to, but otherwise it's been working great. I leave it plugged-in all the time to keep an eye on my MPG and any codes pop up on my junker.

In states where it is legal, cops will not confiscate the detector. Most cops in these states will usually make a snide comment about how they don't work. Virginia usually will cite you for operation/possession AND seize the unit.

Hooray for the Gestapo. In any case, maybe Michigan is just "a little behind" in the technology the cops are using, but my detector goes off 90% of the time when a cop is even nearby. Every once in a while, they don't have the radar on all the time, but they'll "shoot" you selectively if you look like a good target.

Federally, the RD's are not illegal in passenger vehicles (Commercial Vehicles such as trucks are a different story), but that doesn't prevent states from imposing their own sanctions against them. Only Military Bases, Virginia, and Washington DC have active ban's on radar detectors for all drivers.
