depending on what head unit your using, the pre outs have a set line voltage, so by spliting them your really doing nothing, stick with one set of pre outs, your best bet to help with line distortion would be get some premium rca cables for your amp, and as well check out the amps specs for optimum tuning, the manufacturer web page should have them or the manual will have some briefe info on it

well right now i have the headunit with 1 sub out, and at the amp i split it into two channels, if i split from the headunit and only went in one channel at the amp could i theoretically get better bump at lower volumes?

wait what?
If you have a single female RCA for the sub and 2 RCA inputs on the amp your going to want to use a y splitter somewhere along the line but it wouldn't matter if you do it at the hu or amp (i would say do it at the amp so its easier and a single rca has a less of a chance of having something break physically)
If you have 2 female RCAs for the sub then you want to run a set of RCAs all the way to the back for both RCA inputs.
If you have a 2 channel amp bridged you MUST use both inputs on the amp. a mono amp would ~ half power on a single RCA input but a 2 channel needs both to run correctly bridged

its a mono amp
on my headunit there are 6 preamp outs
2 front, 2 back, 1 center, 1 sub
the sub was weak, so im using the 2 front for the component speakers and the amp for the 4 speakers copies the signal to the back (3/4 channel)
so 2 out of the 6 are used... i don't have a center speaker, and the sub is weak, so 4 out of the 6 are used, the last two are the rear left/rear right
from there i have a channel (only left or only right, one physical rca) running from the left rear output to the sub amp where i split it right before the amp into two channels
