Question about Stock Sub

First off...I'm new to doing anything with audio to my car...so bear with me.

Okay well, I just bought another stock sub, the one in the pioneer box and waht not...I'm going to mount it to my trunk, but my question is can I wire it to the battery or is that not safe?

I'm pretty sure that it's not too safe...so I've got an amp ready...

Second question.

Can you un-wire the sub from the battery and run it to the amp when I put it in?

Thanks for the help guys...

sorry...double post...school computers lagged

If the sub has a built in amp on it somewhere then you connect that to the battery. I dont know how the stock sub in the S/C Cobalts get its power. But you can always get a small amp and connect that to the batt. and then connect the sub to the amp and use a line level converter to get your RCA signal.

First off the sub is wired to a amp in the car, a very small amp from what i read... so the sub is not hooked to the batter (get your terms right bud) but yes, if you take the sub out, and rewire the pos and neg off the sub to a channel on your amp, then you hook up your amp the the battery using an amp kit, you will be fine. BUT...

The stock sub cant take a lot of power, odds are nothing more than about 200watts rms and i can ebt money your amp is probably a bit larger than that. So just leach signals off the four wires going to the stock sub enclosure (2 blue and 2 green wires) put those into the HIGH INPUT on your amp, and get another sub or two, and run em like that.

Safety first, dont need to be blowing anything up, let alone speakers.

K so basically you're saying if I try to re-wire the sub to another amp, it'll blow?

the sub will need to connect to an amp. the "+" and "-" speaker part of the amp.
the amp will need to connect to the battery "+" = red "-" = black. the remote wire for the amp is a bit trickier - it needs to run to something that turns off when the car does. Mine is wired into my windshield wiper fuse.
Once all of this is hooked up, you still have no sound. You need to get and hook up a line level converter. They can be bought for pretty cheap. With these, you have to splice into your rear speaker wires to tap into them for sound. On the other end of the line level converter is a place where you can plug in RCA cables. The other end of those go to the amp inputs.

The plug you refer to on the speaker is for the stock amp and wiring. If your car didn't come stock with the sub, it didn't come with the amp or wiring - you'll need to cut it and run straight wires to the output on an amp.

correct.

your car already has the stock sub, so there is no easy place to mount another stock one.

honestly, if you're looking for ease, you are best off with a sub and amp in a box kit.

something like that would make life nice and neat.

or, keep an eye out for when best buy or someone does one of their "sound packages"

the stock sub is pretty weak (im sure everyone will agree) so hooking it up to anything past 200 rms deticated is probably not a good idea, best u get new subs or a powered package, but since you already have the amp, might as well make a trip to car toys / best buy and get a truck box and another sub

i dont think hes actually bought an amp yet thou...
have you ixwombatxi?

What your first major challenge is going to be is getting the second sub to fit right on the other side or wherever you plan on mounting it. Then your going to want to get an aftermarket amp for the subs... like wunsick said i would keep it at about 200w rms per sub so look for one thats rates at 400w @ 2ohms. A good choice would be a kicker ZX400.1 (usually id recommend rockford but they dont have a model that makes 400w @2... theres a 300w thou and its much smaller then said kicker)

wire the subs to the amp like so

Thanks for the input Emperor...adn no I haven't bought an amp yet. I've got one that's old, but I'm not going to use it because it seems pretty shitty...

As far as the mounting goes; the sub fits perfectly on the opposite side as the other one, however it has to be mounted upside down...The other tricky part is going to be drilling INTO the trunk with like no workspace...
