Replace or not replace factory unit?

I have a bunch of audio equipment I want to installthat I haven't yet because I'm not sure what I want to do with the head unit... I prefer a factory look. I wouldn't mind a double din system, but I really don't want to spend the money.

So, should I use the factory unit (standard LS) and get an OEM interfece/processor? Are the factory decks terrible quality?

Maybe I can upgrade my factory unit to the better version (SS/SC) and use the interface? Not a good idea?

Suggestions?

Has anyone used aftermarket speakers/subs, etc with with the stock head unit?

I want to know how the sound quality of the actual head unit is...
