Replacement head unit & steering wheel controls (again)

Sorry to ask such a common question, but..

I've seen ten different answers for this. My stock 06 SS head unit has its LEDs corrupted and unreadable, so I need to replace it this weekend. What's the easiest way to retain the controls? I've heard you need an adapter, but I've also heard a.newer pioneer system can plug right in and work with them. Is either case true?

Also, how do the adapters work if I need one? Do I need to open up the steering wheel itself / is it worth bothering?

yes you need an adapter. some are easier to install then others but you need one regardless and they would all install behind the radio. no such thing as plug right in and work with steering controls
