not a big audio guy i take it?
audio is an odd thing sort of..what sounds good to one person may not to another
are you looking for big thunering bass? or somthing to have not as much thump, and adds more to the sound quality of your songs?
also what kind of a budget are you on for a sub and amp?

Ok im going to over do this but Im going to get very detailed
You can get sound out of just about anything depending on what you want and if you match the ratings. If you want to do it cheap Ive done the JBL special at Circuit City before.
You will want to consider a few things. What type of music?
If you looking for rock music you will want a non ported box. That is best suited for rock. If its rap a ported box tends to give it that bigger rumble.
As far as subs go it depends on cost and how loud you want it.
I can buy a cheap pair of subs for $150 and still make them sound good. One of the main factor in that is proper airspacing of your box and the right power.
When you look at subs You will want to pay attention to the RMS rating and then match that to the RMS rating on your amp. Of course that easier said then done. Reason being is the rms rating on amps are based on the what ohms your running your speakers at.
So say you get two 4ohm subs that are 300 watts rms a piece. You would want an amp to push 600 watts rms. You amp might be a 2 channel 1000 watt amp. Well the thing is usually the rattings are like 500x1 @ 2ohm mono, 150x2 @ 4ohm...so on. Obviously the 4ohm setup on the amp would not be ideal but if you wire both subs together you can make a 2ohm load and get the wattage you want.
Personally I prefer Audiobahn subs. They are relativly cheap and get good sound. As far as an amp goes I like JBL BP600.1 and 1200.1 amps they are hard to find but awesome amps that are udnerated. Also Try to get a class D amp instead of a multichannel amp. A class D amp is made specifically for subs and runs only 1 channel. Mean you would be runnign both subs to 1 channel.
If you need any help let me know. I be glad to assist you with wiring diagrams or just help you find some products.

subwoofer
i just put an 10" MTX thunder 5500 in my cobalt and it is amazing, this thing hits harder than just about any 12" that ive heard. i bought it already in a box for $185 because a Tweeter in my area is going out of business but it still is an awesome subwoofer for the price. if you want alot of thump then id suggest getting something made by MTX or maybe Kicker but if you want more precise bass then a JL Audio sub would probably be best. my brother has two 12" JL Audio's in his car and my MTX definitely thumps more but the JL's are a lot more accurate.
