by key i ment remote, the key chain for the alarm and doors. It only works with the key and i works when you pull the tab on the back, I check the fuse it was good and i could hear it click when i pushed the button and wit the remote. my friends got a cobalt also and i asked him to show me if it did it in his car and when he hits his button or the remote it clicked also. so the fuse is fine just why wont it work wit my remote or key

its clicking so its activating.... meaning no electrical issue... latch is probably misaligned or something
but if hes hearing the click when he tries to pop it it couldn't be the relay or anything like that right? not sure if the stock latch uses an actuator but if so that could be it

Take a look at the latch.
Try working some lube into it
It could just be gummed up.
Not saying that this is definitly the answer, but it's cheaper to try first.

I have been having this same problem with my trunk for months now, but once in a blue moon it wants to work then after a few times of it working it goes back to neither button working. I thought it might be a short somewhere in the car or a wire that might be lose .
