What The F@(k?!?!?

I was told today that in order to replace my head unit on my 07 G5 GT, I would have to keep the original wired in the trunk somewhere so I dont lose things like my airbags.

Is this the same for the 06 and 05 models?? I am asking because I see a lot of aftermarket head units in all the pics.

I know this has probably been asked and ANSWERED a hundred times but I couldnt find it anywhere.

I dont care about my steering wheel controls.

If I dont have to keep the stock head unit, then do I need some sort of module? anyone have any thoughts? answers?? Thanks again guys and girls.

I dont think you need to keep it... There are modules out there to replace it with to keep all of the functionality i think

i thought head units come with a plug and play that goes into the stock plugs and then you can plug all the stock crap into your new headunit...I said that confusingly but I don't exactly know the word I am trying to use here...

I'm pretty sure they are full of it... G5's and Cobalts have the DIC in the dash, so there is no extras needed, and no need to retain the factory deck. I think the only exeption is if you have OnStar.

There's a funny one for you. Would you seriously link the airbags through the radio?! LOL! You put in the worng CD, it starts skipping, and next thing you know you get a face full of nylon. *poof*

If someone really told you that the radio held the controls for the airbag, then that is funny!

The only thing you lose by going to aftermarket deck if you don't have Onstar is the steering wheel controls, but there is an interface harness for most decks that will allow you to retain those functions.

*poof* goddamn radio's acting up again

this is kinda besides the point, but why would you want to change out the factory head unit, especially on the 07 models? I love my '07 2.4SS's head unit. Easy to use interface, CD/MP3/WMA functions + ipod jack, and combined with the "performance stereo" Pioneer equipment, you really can't ask for much better. Very clear with pleny of bass in my opinion. In my old car I went through 3 head units......first a Pioneer, then a Kenwood and finally a Blaupunkt......and none to my liking. I prefer my 'balts stock head unit to those pricey pos's I used in the past........

just my two cents

I know in my 03 Cavy i paid $70 for a 17 foot wiring harness that relocated the stereo to the trunk to keep the airbags and keyless entry...was wondering if it was the same for the Balts...

i wanna shake the hand of the con artist who convinced you to pay that much money just to retain the door chimes in your 03 cavy.

the only thing you need to make a regular $7 harness work is wire a separate switched power source (red wire) so that your deck doesnt have constant power when the car is off. you lose none of the stock functions in the cobalt. NONE. i did this on my 06 LS and even my door chimes still worked

Dude, I changed the radio on my 2007 G5 also and then only thing I lost was the stupid door chimes. The only thing u need to buy is the dash kit and the antenna adapter. It cost me 20$ for both.

In my defense, I went around everywhere and couldn't find a harness that was for it. I went to both Circuit City and Best Buy and they told me the same thing. I tried looking online and everything. My friend got her aftermarket radio installed at BB and they did the same with hers. I bought mine and did it myself.

I got hosed, Bika, I got hosed...

lol. ecotecon18s, it happens to everyone at some point.
Im guessing that dealerships tell you that bullshit about airbags and whatever else in an attempt to discourage modifying. since when have dealerships known anything

...hmmm...good point...
Cobalt SS/SC: "I'd like to get the Stage 2 kit installed in my car..."
Dealership: "Stage 2? What is that? You sure we carry that? I've never heard of such..."

ummmm. no
actualy the air bag does hace a sensor that goes into the radio harness.
the cobalt uses lan lines through the computer and other electronics i belive that the onstar is also ran through the radio for mute purpouses. belive me the first time i replaced the cd player i forgot to loop the air bag lines and i had a air bag light on.

the air bag wires are green in color and alls you have to do is splice them together. mines an 05 by the way.
