I just picked up a 05 Cobalt as my dailey driver and keep my SS in the garage. The 05 had the stock stereo on it so I went and got a new stereo instaled that has the AUX input on the front of it. It works with all of my XM portable radios and my Ipod. All I had to do was buy a 1/8" to 1/8" plug at radio shack and it don't get any easier than that than playing my Ipod through my headunit. Good stuff.

I've hooked up the iPod interface. Kind of mixed results.
I can get sound from my iPod into the stereo, sounds great. I can skip through the playlist, and I can turn shuffle on and off. I can get the song title and artist to display, but I have to press PType-Ptype-MSG-then hold MSG for a sec, and it will scroll "Artist" for a sec, then "title" then "C1". Kind of strange.

One thing that you need to know, if you have XM, you will have to wire some kind of relay to turn off your XM unit. Since I dont use my XM tuner at all, I just disconnected mine.

I am unable to use the browse function of the ipod through the stereo yet, but I think that is because of the same reason I dont get a display all the time.

I have a 2006 SS/SC with Onstar, and it had XM, but doesnt anymore (XM sucked anyways)

I have been in contact with Metra (they are the ones that make the unit) and they are working on the problem. I will update as I find out more from them, as there might be some kind of update on the unit itself.
for reference, this is the unit that I bought:
