new garrett turbo kit info

i just received this from garrett after asking some questions.

my question:

how is the cobalt turbo kit project going? any specific eta on when i can purchase it? any preliminary numbers? will it be for the 2.2 and the 2.4 engines? thanks.

garrett response:

Thank you for your interest in the Cobalt turbo kit! I wish that I could give you specifics on all of your questions, but I can only answer a couple of them. I cannot give a specific ETA for the kit, but I can assure you that we are hard at work and ensuring that the same quality that goes into each Garrett Turbocharger is going into the turbo kit.

The kit is being designed for the 2.2 L Ecotec engine. I have included a pdf of the flyer that was distributed at SEMA with the specifications that we are, at this time, releasing to the public. Sorry I can’t be any more detailed at this time.

DROOL! I wonder if they are going to have different stage kits, or just the one above... It would also be nice to know what kinda of boost range they are going to be capable of...

I've got a lot of work to do to be ready for this one....

the "disco potato" turbo itself is capable of producing 350 hp, so what you will need to do is spend some money on the internals and get a new boost controler hopefully a nice electronic one that you can change on the fly. Then you will be cruzin with the srt4's!

Eh..I would prefer to EAT SRT'4's rather than cruise with them....

I'm not all too familiar with the process of prepping engine internals for large boosting applications...so if I were to look for some help on what I need to buy and such...would Jegg's be a possibility? or would that be a mistake hehe

i dont think jegs would be able to help you, they cater more to muscle cars, if anyone can help you as far as a vendor goes i would contact turbotech racing. this kit will help you to eat them but only after internals and tranny and a boost controller to up the boost.

Take a look at the GM build book for the cobalt. It has part numbers and venders for all the parts you will need to take your cobalt all the way to pro drag car! I am only interested in the up to 350 hp section though

i dont remeber them hitting on how to tune the cobalt though since we have no aftermarket ecu, are we supposed to go to gm for a custom tune on the stock computer or what?

yeh around $4k would be a good estimate...especially since it includes basically everything you would need...other than engine internals of course..

If you build your own turbo kit as I am doing you could have a complete kit for less than $2500 and use the extra $1500 you'd save for other upgrades (clutch, motor mounts, etc.)

As easy adn simple as it sounds to design and build your own, there is alot of room for trial and error. Design it stronger than it has to be. Use high wuality name brand components and you will reduce the chance of headaches..
