SMG's first...REMOTE MOUNT TURBO TWINCHARGED LSJ!!!

As some of you know that may frequent the shop...we here at SMG are always up for trying new and different combinations.

Yes, just like the title says....we just finished up building our first and first for the community, a Remote mount turbo, twincharged LSJ. We do have a few build pics to post and have just begun some of the initial tuning on low boost ( 7psi wastegate spring) however no final dyno numbers on the low boost settings are complete.... just trying to get our initial driveability tuning set. However... we expect to make right around 300whp on the low boost settings I.e. 7psi spring on the gate, and fully expect 400+ whp once the real fun begins!

AGAIN... NO FINAL NUMBERS AS of YET... the kit was just finished and we just have begun driveablilty tuning at this point. THANKS EVERYONE!











for info on the car... it has a 60-1 turbo, 60 lbs injectors, M62 with 3.35 pulley, dual pass, front mount heat exchanger. No FMIC being used here as the cooling mods already inplace... coupled with the length of pipe and time allowed for the boosted air from the turbo to cool down on its trip from the back to the front of the car provides plenty of cooling effect!

glad the lsjs guys have more options now.

i also like how you have the intake for the turbo inside the trunk spare area.
keeps any crap out of it.

Very clean setup guys, interested in boost/whp numbers,

but that is a ton of crush bent pipe

I bet once that car has full 3" mandrel bent pipe it will spool considerably faster

not bad it looks like that piping could used to be optimized/ could use a custom exhaust would help you optimize the turbo piping.. yes more piping helps the cooling aspect but it's running alot of bends

Thanks everyone! So far so good on the tuning with the Blow through MAF setup... No issues arising as of yet... Fred Jr. is working his magic on it as usual

Very nice, taking a diff. approach. with the turbo in the back do you have greater turbo lag?

you know its funny... we were all skeptical on the piping... with all the bends etc....and not being mandrel.... however this things seems to spool incredibly well for being a 60-1.... Fred made a couple short short hits a few mins ago....and spooling is very quick...came up on what seems like full boost for the low boost settings we have now and he says its hitting full spool at 3,200-3,300 rpm

Wow I am liking this a lot. New approach compared to the sts system.

That is really complicated with routing the oil line, ic piping, vac line.....

good work.


like the intake setup as well

also i'd upgrade to 79 lb injectors for when you start upping the boost

and like i said and japeatr brought up

i'd look at doing a custom exhaust that sits over a bit more let the turbo piping run through the exhaust tunnel if you can or run it in on the other side of the exhaust being it's crush bent and theres alot of piping thats not helping IMO its a nice start but there are things that can be tweaked

most definitely... we can always improve on things... for the first go round we think its going to work out well... as what we call a "prototype kit" just to ensure everything will work with the rear mount setup.

Unfortunately you cant run the piping through the exhaust tunnel or over the axle on the same side as the exhaust as room doesnt permit... which is why we went the way we did. Also, we kept in mind that the customer drives this all year round... and ground clearance wise this does not sit any lower than the exhaust system does.

As far as the oil line setup... its really no different than what STS does... as its oil fed from the motor... and scavanged back to the engine with a pump... pretty simple theory when it comes down to it.

it pretty tight in the tunnel as it is especially with 3" piping. But i agree, with even pre-madrel bent curves and TIG weld them together there is much improvement, but i have seen a number of these builds on a few other makes and it is surprising how they are still able to delivery moderate boost levels that far back (corvette LS2, V6 mustang, and others)

BTW 3 bar MAF or stock 2.5Bar?

What's the cost, what hp, what tq, make a bunch of those im sure they would sell faster then the basic twincharge because of its rear location, it looks awesome nice job smg

Intake in the trunk? Ill bet noone will need an intake tube for this, just put down your back seat.

Is thie final setup? (crush bends, etc.....)

i'd suggest looking at a 2.2 members STS build on here

thats the demo from the STS site see how even though it takes the same path it's much cleaner

also you could make the exhaust go under the axle someone on here has done it and it doesnt really cut down on any clearance this will make it so you can bring the turbo piping that direction

Not knocking the project itself, but this just doesnt look the kind of quality Id expect from SMG based on everything Ive heard about them............Sorry.

We have looked at that bbuild....just decided to go a different route.

KEEP IN MIND... this is a prototype setup at the moment... all the piping made to this point is for future piping mock-up for kits in the future... this was just to get everything setup and fuctioning as a rear mount twin charged setup.... future will bring mandrel and coated piping have no fear!!!
