No, the ratio of said gear is what gives you better gas milage. Take for instance a Powerglide 2 speed transmission. First is usually 3:1 and second is 1:1. Sure its' a huge jump, but any motor can make that kinda jump, even a BB. And they can't rev for theet yanno?
first gear is 1.76 on a powerglide not a 3:1---that would be too big of a gap.
(there were a few different ratios for first---all less then 2:1)
My friends old 67 RS Camaro had a 383 anda powerglide--ran low 14's
