It is about time this has finally happened. This happened to me on the way down to FL for vacation. Gm really built these cars shitty..... Pisses me off to..
Not to mention this is only one issue that this car has. There are tons more..... If I do not get this letter I am going to be pissed. I had mine replaced with one of the old motors....

A recall covers all cars affected by it even ones out of warrenty. And this is just great more negative issues with these cars to bring down even more the low resale value on them. At this rate you might not even be able to give one away for free
One has to wonder after coming out of bankruptcy if they can pull through this hugh loss of money to fix 1.3 million cars

Although to avoid grooving just change to ceramic pads.
I've said that from the get go, and if I end up with a SS/TC that will be the first thing I do straight from the dealer. Trip to the store to change the pads.

And very important for those who have already paid for out of pocket repairs, once the formal recall is announced and GM starts to do repairs (NHTSA hasn't released the February report yet of recalled models), you will more than likely be able to get GM to cover your previous repair expenses. That goes for pretty much any recall that is announced but may require a little leg work to send in proof of previous repairs. Best bet is to give it a couple weeks until a dealer can pull up the repair info and then contact GM corporate customer relations.

What I'm curious about is to see if the SS Turbo models will be covered as they contained a stronger, up-rated electrical assist unit. If they do fall under the campaign I'll probably wait to ensure they there is an SS-specific replacement before I take my car in.

Tag.
If this works anything like my company's recall campaigns, you'll get two letters. The first will be blanketed out immediately to advise of the issue but to wait for the second letter. The second wave will go out in stages designed to somewhat stagger the flow of people coming in and ensure a good supply of parts.
If you all rush in now, I would NOT guarantee they'll have parts on hand.

It should be all regular models including the supercharged "LSJ" SS cars since the power assist/column is the same if I recall correctly and it might include the new SS Turbo models (but I have a feeling they might not be included). You should be able to call customer service at the link posted above or contact your dealer and have them check your VIN. Since this is a voluntary recall it may take a while to have everything updated so don't be surprised if your dealer doesn't have the info yet.

The last line is important. It sounds like they have determined there's a problem and probably already have a course of action, but may not be able to start repairs yet. Best bet if you bought your car used or have changed address from where you were when you first bought the car is to update your ownership info with GM here so they will know where to mail the recall info once it's underway (note that it requires registration and if you'd don't want to register the customer service hotline should be able to update their records for you).

GM Recalls Compact Cars to Fix Power Steering Assist
Safety Recall Covers 1.3 Million Chevrolet and Pontiac Models
·2005 - 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt
·2007 - 2010 Pontiac G5
·2005 - 2006 Pontiac Pursuit (Canada)
·2005 - 2006 Pontiac G4 (Mexico)
DETROIT -- General Motors will conduct a safety recall of 1.3 million compact cars to replace a motor in the power steering system. Vehicles affected are the 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt; 2007-2010 Pontiac G5; 2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit sold in Canada, and the 2005-2006 Pontiac G4 sold in Mexico.
GM told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about the voluntary recall on Monday after concluding an investigation that began in 2009. NHTSA opened an investigation Jan. 27 into approximately 905,000 Cobalt models in the United States after receiving more than 1,100 complaints of loss of power steering assist, 14 crashes and one injury.
"After our in-depth investigation, we found that this is a condition that takes time to develop. It tends to occur in older models out of warranty," said Jamie Hresko, GM Vice President of Quality. “Recalling these vehicles is the right thing to do for our customers' peace of mind.
"While greater steering effort under 15 mph may be required, if the customer experiences loss of power steering assist, it is important to note that the vehicle can still be safely controlled because the customer can still steer the vehicle,” Hresko said. “When the condition occurs, both a chime will sound and a ‘Power Steering’ message will be displayed.”
Plans for the remedy are being developed. Customers will be notified when the plan is finalized.
