I just don't think there is enough market for rwd coupes any more. Everybody wants awd but awd is expensive. fwd was the way to go on the cobalt so that the base model could sell like crazy and make enough money to support justifying a ss model.

someone on here once said it the best.

2.2=daily driver rental car

SS/NA= a car high school kids buy, quick but still slow

SS/SC (AND NOT LNF) was more a enthusiasts car

obviously this sparked a long thread of hate..but it really did make sense (i owned a SS/NA at the time)

HEY! i like my rental car.

it was all i could afford at teh time.

but she's gonna be getting some nice forced induction pretty soon!

and i would never ever justify putting an "SS" badge on any base model cobalt. i think that's the biggest fail evar.

the best part about a no badge ss is when people ask you if its a v6 hahaha they really hate it when they find out its a sc 4cyl that spanked them

So basically the only brand that got the badging thing right was Pontiac. Yet they killed it?

When you think about it, Pontiac had the Base/SE line, the GT line, the GTP line, and the holy grail GXP line. Does it get more right than that?

DETROIT — Don't expect Chevrolet in the future to put the SS moniker on every model in the same way, says General Motors new Vice President of Global Engineering Mark Reuss.

Reuss told reporters Thursday that instead of smearing the SS across Chevrolets "like peanut butter," the "new" GM will carefully consider which models get the SS designation at all, which ones will get SS as just a trim level and which ones will get the full SS treatment.

He noted that throughout Chevrolet's history, SS has been used as a sporty trim package as well as on a full-blown model with a powerful engine and all of the accompaniments. But mixing the two strategies as GM did with the Cobalt was "a mistake," he said.

"We probably didn't do a very good job on the Cobalt SS," said Reuss, who headed GM's performance operations before taking over GM's Holden operations in Australia, just prior to his newest job. "We came out with probably the best sport compact tuner with the 265-horsepower Cobalt SS. That car was an amazing track car, it was fun to drive and it was very affordable."

But then GM also put the SS label on a Cobalt as a trim package but without the engine and other performance hardware.

"That was confusing — confusing to me and confusing to the customer," said Reuss. "It's like trainspotting, figuring out which SS has the 265-horsepower engine."

Inside Line says: Chevrolet's SS label in the future will mean something. — Michelle Krebs, Senior Analyst and Editor at Large

ss was always for the high performance cars and thats the way it should have always been.Thank god they figured it out.

they should only put ss badging on cars that come with more power and better trim levels not just one or the other. They should not make these middle grade cars like the 2.4 and call it an ss people got pissed they got ripped off. There were 2 that got brought back to my old dealership I worked at because they bought them thinking they were a different car all together .

I got the 08 Sport because I did'nt want a turbo or super charged 2.0 to have expensive break downs in the future and I bought mine because it looks good and beats Honda's so that's all I care about. And as for Cobalts being badged SS only the turbo should be badged SS and the super charged should of been badged RS. as the artical said a hp rating of 265 was a true SS

the slapping your self part was about how the sc souldnt be bagded ss but the tc should and a true ss is 265hp but the tc isnt even 265whp lol.

eh everyone makes a big deal out of the SS badge should only be on one motor....

Guess was it wasnt in the day.

Anyone remember? SS 350 SS 396. Even back in the day the SS moniker was on multiple Engine choices. Now everyone is acting like its the holygrail...

and thats the reason i love my 07 as well it was only made two years as the officially factory deemed SS and later down the line im talking like 35 years it might be a rare car im not sayin it was the best but it was still a decent car thats just my opinion though

Try re reading the artical or maybe have someone a little smater explain it to you. it says cars around 265 hp is a true SS and the turbo Cobalt is the only one that comes the close to it
