2005's

New for 2005.

October 2004

Chevrolet Aveo
The Korean-built Chevrolet Aveo is being positioned as the perfect new car in which to send your child off to college. The entry-level Special Value Package starts at under $10,000, right in line with a year’s worth of tuition. The Aveo, which is offered in both sedan and 5-door hatchback body styles, is powered by a 103-bhp 1.6-liter dohc inline-4. It feels relatively peppy when teamed with the standard 5-speed manual, less so with the 3-speed automatic.

Chevrolet Cavalier
This is the final hurrah for the Cavalier, which will be phased out as Chevy Cobalt production ramps up. Offered in coupe and sedan body styles, the Cavalier returns with its 140-bhp Ecotec inline-4 with a choice of a 5-speed manual or optional 3-speed automatic transmission. As a youth-oriented, entry-level vehicle, Chevy stresses the wide range of audio options that includes MP3/CD and XM satellite radio. As it’s a lame duck, look for huge discounts from dealers on this one.

NEW! Chevrolet Cobalt
Taking up where the Cavalier leaves off is the all-new Chevy Cobalt with its extra dollop of performance. The contemporary styled hatchback and sedan are powered by the same 140-bhp 2.2-liter Ecotec four as the Cavalier in base models. Shortly after launch, the Cobalt SS, sporting a supercharged 2.0-liter four making 200 bhp, will bow. With its sport-tuned suspension, 6-speed manual and underhood punch, Chevy hopes to make a big impression on the “Fast and Furious” crowd.

NEW! Chevrolet Corvette
The sixth-generation Corvette is simply the best ever. A longer wheelbase, roomier cabin and higher levels of refinement add to overall ride comfort, yet its more powerful 400-bhp 6.0-liter V-8 and razor-sharp handling make it more responsive than the car it replaces. Both coupe and convertible have stiff structures, and the roadster benefits from a new optional power top. Not only is the car all-new, but some clever pricing makes comparably equipped models actually less expensive to own. See our Road Test.

Chevrolet Impala
Although the Impala is getting a bit long in the tooth (a new one is slated for 2006), Chevy’s family hauler still offers a wide range of options from mild to wild. The base car is powered by a 3.4-liter ohv V-6 making 180 bhp, while the workhorse 3.8-liter pushrod V-6 with 200 bhp seems to be a better match. The SS, with its 240-bhp supercharged 3.8-liter V-6, has both the performance and the looks worthy of the nameplate. See our First Drive.

Chevrolet Malibu/Maxx
In its quest to redefine the midsize family-car market, Chevy introduced the Malibu Maxx, a 5-door hatch that has a longer wheelbase and yet is a half-inch shorter than the sedan. The Maxx comes with a 200-bhp 3.5-liter ohv V-6 as standard equipment. Sedans have a 144-bhp 2.2-liter four standard, offering the V-6 as an option. Price and performance are competitive with the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, and Chevy promises that the electric power steering is sharper in 2005 models.

Chevrolet Monte Carlo
Win on Sunday, sell on Monday is the credo behind the Chevrolet Monte Carlo, a 2-door coupe that has outlasted rivals both inside and outside GM. Buyers can opt for an entry-level model powered by a 3.4-liter 180-bhp V-6, or if they want to drive like Dale Jr., albeit in a front-drive street car, the Supercharged SS with the 240-bhp 3.8-liter V-6 is the ticket. Also, the normally aspirated SS with the 200-bhp 3.8-liter V-6 is renamed the Monte Carlo LT.
